Tel Aviv Macabbi World Champs ' Jewish Student Press Service by Barry Chamish a free loanee writer in Jerusalem Tel Aviv: A nation’s ac- complishrnehts boosts its morale and brings its people closer together. In Israel, one sports team has probably done more to boost the nation’s morale than anything else besides the military. That team is Tel Aviv Macabbi. Macabbi competes yearly with _ teams from seven other nations for the European Cup, symbolic of basketball supremacy outside America. The Tel Aviv Macabbi are not remarkable for their tremen dous skill but rather for their tremendous ability to win miraculous victories. The core of the team is American. Lou Silver and Eric Mencken are American Jews who were stars in college basket ball, were attracted to play in Israel, liked it and became citizens. Jim’ Boatright - and Aulcie Perry were American Christians who fell in love with the country and converted to Judaism. Perry, in fact, is black and has changed his name to Elishu Ben Avraham. Moti Aroesti and Mickey Berkowitz are native Israelis and both show immense cunning despite their short statures. A new addi tion to this year’s team is one MacNamara, another black at tracted from American college ranks. As Tal Brody said, “They’re a real team and they win when it’s supposed to be im possible.” And that’s Macabbi. The team that wins when it’s sup posed to be impossible. Editor’s note: Tal Brody (former Macabbi great) is the brother of a former Charlot- tean,' Rene Brilliant (Mrs. Marvin). Rene and her fami- ly reside in Denver, Colorado now. Tal has visited Charlotte, and many of you may hcive had the privilege of meeting him and his charming wife and children as I did. We wish the Macabbi’s luck in their com ing season and look for them to continue in the tradition they have established..,.' winning.
