UIA has provided more than $2.5 billion since 1967 for housing, immigra tion, absorption, rural settlements, education, youth care, and other social needs. Its continued involvement in building and preserving the Jewish homelaind through the programs of the Jewish Agency for Israel, its sole operating agent, has enabled Israel to absorb over one and a half million immigrants. Hundreds of U.S. communities participate annually in raising funds for the United Jewish Appeal — mostly through th'eir Federa tion campaigns. As the major beneficiary of the UJA fund-raising ‘ efforts, UIA fulfills the American commitment to assist in the resettlement and absorption of refugees in Israel by supervising the flow and expenditure of funds for these purposes. To help meet the needs of the Jewish Agency and to insure the continuous flow of cash, UIA supplements funding to the Agency through debt finan cing. 'Phe UIA Jerusalem office serves as liaison with the Agency and is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the expenditure of the U.S. funds. ' ' It is titled “David Escaped from the Net,” an adaptation of an autobiographical novel by Joel Koening, first published in 1960. ' • Joel Koening, the pseudohyni of a Jewish biochemist, has been on the staff of the Children’s Hospital in Rotter dam for the past 20 years. His novel was rediscovered recently by Peter IJlienthal, a German- Jewish television executive who made contact with the author and produced a film version. Will Donate Royalties It will be screened this week, coincidental with the release of the original novel in paperback edition under the title “DaVid, the Account of a Survivor.” Koening plans to donate the royalties from both the film and paperback to a foundation he es tablished to spread knowledge about the nazi period among young people and to promote better understanding between Jews and non-Jews. The story covers the years 1932-1943 in the life of the fami-: ly of a fictional Rabbi Singe in l^rlin. It focuses on one of the sons, David, who, with one sister, is hidden from the nazis by compassionate Germans after the rest of his family is deported. In 1943 David and his sister manage to escape from Germany and survive. Koening, now in his middle 50s, said in an interview-that. apart from his profession, writing is his chief interest. He said he plans a novdl about the sons of the persecuted and the sons of the persecutors, and how both live today against the backgrounds of their parents’ pasts.
