CENTER SPORTS SCENE page 5—THE NEWS—May 1979 Summer Season Begins Pools Open May 28th ITie pools at the JCC will open Memorial Day Weekend. Exten sive work is underway to ensure an outstandingsummer of fun and enjoyment for those using the facilities. Mr. Ai i^sak, pool- committee chairperson, reports that crepe myrtle trees have been planted on the slopes leading from the upper to the lower pool levels. In addition these 10 foot trees will not only provide shade but will lend bright color all through their blossom ing season. New lounge recliners and additional tables and um brellas have been added and will provide comfort and pleasure for many more swimmers. Grass seeing, lawn care and an entirely new plumbing system will make for a green and leak-free season. Returning for the third year as pool director will be Jim Oddo. Jim is at work assembling his staff and planning program. Also a welcome returnee will be the Delitown snack bar under the direc tion of Jimmy Roupas. During 1978 the JCC began a series of programmed activities for families and all ages at the pool on weekends. These will continue and will expand in 1979. Shuffleboard, ping pong, swimming and diving contests, basketball and special holiday programs are a part of the schedule. 'llie pool hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday to Friday and 12 noon to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. If you have questions concerning guest policy, JCC membership, etc. call 366-0357. t Swim Team Registration The Swim Team is now open for registration for boys and girls up to age 17. In order to participate in any swim meets, swimmers must be registered on the form below and fees paid. No swimmer may par ticipate in a meet unless registered in this manner. 'Fhe staff for the 3’s and 4’s are qualified, experienced pre-school teachers. The 2 year old ‘‘Munchkins” and the Kindergarten through 5th grade camp groups still have openings. But again, don’t delay, the sooner we know how many children will be participating the sooner we can determine our staff needs. Our priipary goal is to have an ex cellent camp for your children. We will not over enroll at the risk of not having sufficient staff. Get your registrations in TODAY! The first session is June 25th to July 13th and the second session is July I6th to August 3rd. Sue Carltoa will be counselor for the 3’s. Chips Johnson is the counselor for the 4’s. Rory Rousso and Julie Weigele, counselors in Camp Mitzvah,- will be returning this summer. There are many other very exciting prospects for staff members for the summer. We arelooldng forward to a very exciting camp season! For ALL Your Insurance Needs 333-6694 Soccer Waylett Joins Staff After two years of fumbling around, the Jewish Community Center is kicking off children’s soccer teams to enter existing leagues. The “J” is pleased to announce that Michael Waylett has joined the staff as our children’s soccer coach. On Wednesday, May 9th, JCC members and their children (boys and girls ages 7-15) are in vited to meet Michael at the “J” at 7:00 p.m. At this time registrations will be accepted for our soccer teams. Practices will begin in August and league play in the fall. J:NCL0SED FIND $8.00 REGISTRATION FEE Michael Weylett Michael is a recent graduate of State University College at Brockport, New York, which has one of the largest physical education programs in the coun try. Michael played on soccer teams in high school and while in college participated in ad vanced Soccer skills courses and clinics. He is now an accredited soccer official. He coached soccer teams in New York prior to moving to Charlotte. He has also ^ worked in all areas "of children’s physical education programs. Basketball Team Triumphs The Charlotte JCC Men’s Basketball team consisting of 11 players participated in com petition with the men’s team from the JCC in Columbia, S.C. The score was 59-43 Charlotte. An interesting note, the members of Columbia’s team averaged 10 to 12 years younger than Charlotte’s players, but “thanks to Charlottean Larry Horowitz we done dood it!” JCC and YWCA Co-Sponsor Women’s Softball The JCC and the Park Rd. YWCA have made arrangements to co sponsor a softball league for women. The 10 week progfram will begin in mid-May and operate Tuesday evenings starting at 6 p.m. on the JCC playing field. Wanda CJeer, YWCA physical education staff member in charge of the program, states that the joint program came as a result of an interesting coincidence. As part of his week as co-host of GoodMor ning Carolina, JCC Director Marvin Bienstock invited the Y gym nastics team to appear on the program. The new director of the Y, Mrs. Virgrinia.Stevens, came to the JCC to discuss arrangments, took a tour, saw the softball field and proposed the joint venture. Approximately 4-6 teams will be formed. Ms, Greer indicates she has already had a large response to the Y publicity but nobody will be excluded who wants to play. Fee for participating is $10 for a member of either the YW or the JCC. Any woman belonging to both organizations will only have to pay a $6 fee. For registration infor mation, call the JCC (366-0357). Tennis All juniors, boys and girls>18 and under, interested in par ticipating in (^ueen City Tennis League matches this summer must contact Helen Phillips (364-6434) by May 8. The number of teens we enter will be determined by the response to this article. Call now, don’t delay and be sorry later that we have no junior participation. Also, all juniors and adults in terested in clinics this summer must notify Helen Phillips at 364-6434. Queen (Jity Tennis League is presently in session for ladies on Wednesday and Thursday mor nings and on Saturday mor nings for the men. Our ladies B team is presently in first place — Congratulations — Keep up the good work. There’s “love” at the JCC.
