. David and Mira Kaminker,
who moved to Charlotte from
Leningrad las^ummer, are also
interested in liiaking Mends in-
the Jewish community. They
live at the Abbey Apts, and may
be reached at 523-7595. They are
joining the Chai group at the
■ JCC and recently had a very en
joyable weekend at Wildacres a.%
the Yiddish Institute. They do
not speak English but are fluent
in Yiddish. They would be in
terested in attending services at
Temple . Israel on Saturday
mornings but have no
transportation.
Gregory and Eva Barkan,
who moved to Charlotte early in
April, have been busy with their
new jobs, driving lessons and
studying English at home.
Gregory works for Guerra Signs
and Eva is a nurses aide. Sonya
and Anatoyle Kaminin, a couple
who immigrated to Charlotte
with their children in 1948, have
adopted the Barkans. The
Kaminins are also good Mends
of David and Mira Kaminker.
The Barkans live in the Myrtle
Apts, located near Temple Israel
and are also interested in
meeting people. Their phone
number is 57frl506. They speak
a little English and fluent Yid
dish. Gregory enjoys singing
and plays the guitar.
The best way for these three
families tp learn English is by
.being an active part of the com-
iniinit^r. ’I'hey need more than
housing, food, ciothing, medical
treatment, etc: They need people'
vyho care enough to share a part
of their lives with them. like the
rest of us, they need friends.

All Nations Festival
Draws Large Crowd
Oooops
So sorry, we slipped. In our
last issue Dr. Philip Naumoff
and his wife Ester were
inadvertently left out as
having served as presidents
of the Charlotte Lodge of

Works!
Almost 7,000 people passed
through the Civic Center the
weekend of Memorial Day. They
came to see, hear, taste and
learn about the multicultural
nature of Charlotte. The occa
sion Was the 4th Annual All
Nations Festival which this
year bec£^me part of the World
600. More than 37 nations set up
displays, sold food and per
formed on the huge stage. The
result,was a continual flow of
music and the sound of Spanish,
Italian, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic,
French, Finnish, Ppolish, etc.
The Israeli exhibit was
arranged by Dafna Michaeli
and Cookie Glick. It featured a
poster display about life in
Jerusalem and a showcase filled
with Chanukiot, menorahs and
candies'. Flanking the showcase
were two tables. On the left were
products and crafts represen
ting modern Israel; the table on
the right held five cases display-
ing archaeological artifacts
from ancient Israel. Among
those contributing articles to
the display were Ruth Goldbert,
Rabbi Harold Krantzler, Rabbi
Sandy and Renee 'Pucker, Mar-

vin and Gail Bienstock, Sally
Schrader, Tammi Bernat,
Miriam Kiss and the Temple
Beth El Gift Shop.
The Israel stage presentation
was a departure from almost all-
the others. Instead of perfor
ming for the audience, Renee
Tucker invited those watching
to come to the stage and learn
Israeli dances. An enthusiastic
group responded and for the en
tire allotted half hour they work- ‘
ed their way through the steps of
the hora and other dances.
The booth was manned by
members of the Jewish com
munity including many
Israelis. In order to observe the
Sabbath a local church provided
booth watchers for Friday even
ing. On Saturday and Sunday
the following families took care
of the booth: Bernat, Harrel,
Glick, l^ice, Weinglass, 'l\icker,
Michaeli, Bienstock, Kiss,
Stern, and Waga. These same
families will now begin plans
for the Israeli booths at the
UNCC Festival in September,
and for next year’s All Nations
Festival.

Middle East Memo:
Tehran: Nightmare Begins
For the first time, two private
individuals have been executed
for their activities during the
time of the old regime. One was
a Jew, a leader of the communi
ty, Habib Elghanian. The
charge: “treason through his
connections with Israel and
Zionism.”
^ For the 70,000 Jews held
hostage by Khomeini’s regime,
there is profound fear. Con
temptuous of any regard for
human rights and due process of
law, a bloodthirsty regime that
takes its lead from the terrorist
PLO and that has already ex
ecuted 200 Iranians seems ready
to turn on the Jews.
The formal charges against
Elghanian included “friendship
with the enemies of (jod and be
ing an enemy of the friends of
God,” as well as the standard
“corruption on the earth” and
“warring with (Jod and his
emissaries.”
The trials are held in secret;
there are no defense lawyers, no
cross-examination of witnesses,
no appeals. Only arrest,
judgment, sentence and the
firing squad.
Elghanian died because he
was a Jew. He faced the firing
squad because he was guilty of
loving Israel, of buying a piece
of land there and of meeting in
the early 60’s with such men as
Eban and Dayan.
If these are the standards by
which life and death are
measured in the revolutionary
courts of Iran, one can express
only revulsion and borrow —
and profound foreboding for the
lives of the Jews who remain.
For who is the Jew in Iran, or
anyplace else in the world, who
does not have a friend or family
in Israel, or who has not given a
coin or a check to help the people
of Israel live in security and
dignity and peace?
