Pilot Program
(Continued from Page 1)
filled with the problems of hous
ing, health, relationships with
family, functioning as part of
the community and, most of all,
combatting loneliness.
The focus of the worker would
be direct counseling with the
aged and their families as well
as serving as a referral resource
helping to locate appropriate
specialized services where need
ed. The pilot program will begin
as soon as a caseworker is hired.
Deadline for
September issue
is

Jewish Youtli
Leader Of
The Year
The first Pierre Gildesgame
Annual Award for the Jewish
Youth Leader of the Year has
been won by Shimon Cohen, 19-
year-old youth leader of Cardiff,
Wales. The award was
presented to him in the House of
Commons.
Mr. Gildesgame, who conceiv
ed the Award to promote the
development of Jewish youth
leadership in the United
Kingdom, is the president of the
International Maccabiah
Games Committee and former
chairman of the Maccabiah
World Union Executive.
The Aw’ard, which carries a
cash prize, has enabled Mr.
Cohen to come to the United
States this summer for a 6-week
work/study experience at the
Center of the Jewish Communi-
ty in Stamford, Conn.
Arrangements for him to come
to the Stamford Center were
made by JWB and the World
Confederation of Jewish Com
munity (Centers.
Mr. Coehn was a Bnei Akiva
leader in his native Cardiff,
where he was a madrich
(leader) in camps for a number
of years.
Thanks
The JCC thanks those who
helped the Day Camp in a
special way.
Lomars sent Julie Tosi, one
of their employees to the J to
work with the camp staff on
physical education skills. John
Crane, another Lomars
employee, taught the fishing
part of the sports specialty.
Dorcas Zeeso brought with
her all of her gymnastics equip
ment which added a new dimen
sion to gymnastics.
Eddie Leighton assembled
the first aid kits and worked
with the camp staff on first aid
which is applied regularly in
camp. During orientation with
the staff Gloria Lemer par
ticipated and helped in many
areas such as physical educa
tion activities, working with the
four year olds in instructional
swim. Her daily participation
and concern were valued and
much appreciated by all in
camp.
Jim Oddo, the J’s “man in
charge of the pools”, worked
with the staff during orientation
on our instructional swim
program. His guidance and help
with the staff were a big help in
the swimming program.
For several years the Anti-
Defamation League through its
involvement in Latin America
has highlighted the problems
that Jews are encountering es
pecially in Argentina. ADL has
compiled a list of individuals,
mostly Jews, who are either
political prisoners or have
'‘disappeared”. Massive
violations of human rights have
resulted in imprisonments, kid
nappings, and disappearances
of thousands.
The following is a letter which
was sent to ADL which best tells
the plight from the standpoint
of one family.
Dear ADL:
I want to tell you the misfor
tune which has pursued me
since my birth. When I was four
years old, a band massacred
people in my little town in the
Ukraine. I, my brothers and my
parents fled to the woods and
remained alive, unfortunately. I
say unfortunately because we
remained alive to keep on suffer
ing. Soon after my brothers and
my parents, with their
grandchildren in their arms,
were assasinated and thrown
into a common grave.
I came to Argentina before the
war. It was a blessed land for
me, until misfortune touched me
another time. After I learned
about the murder of my family
and of the Jewish trag^y, I did
not want to keep on living or
marry and have children. Even
tually time and loneliness caus
ed me to change my mind. I
formed a happy, beautiful home
and family. We dedicated
ourselves to work and study.
The 11th of August, 1976 at
3:30 in the morning, the armed
forces of this government broke
into my house, they are loyal im
itators of the Hitler government.
With explosives they blew out
the door of my house, and with a
machine gun stole whatever
they wanted. They tied our
hands and blindfolded us and
took away my two sons, ages 18
and 25.
My sons’ question as to why
they were taking them was not
answered. My sons were taken
by mistake, as was the assault
on my house. They were looking
for another person but not
knowing on which floor he lived,
they came and entered my
apartment. The young man they
sought, had been sent out of the
country by his parents some
time before the federal police
arrived to arrest him. The police
admitted that they had made a
mistake in coming to our floor,
but when they left our building,
they scrawled swastikas on cars
parked nearby. I have not seen
my sons nor do I know anything
about them. I ask you, ADL,
help the one who writes this
letter and other Jewish parents
who are going through the same
suffering. I ask you in my name
and in the name of all those
Jews who have gone to all the
places in order to know what
happened to their sons, get back
our sons from the Hitlerites. You
can influence; the cries of the
Jews in America help.
I greet you, ADL, and I ask
you to pardon my bothering you.
(For obvious reasons the letter
does not convey the name or ad
dress of the sender.)
Disappearances continue,
although at a lesser rate than in
previous years. Years ago, we
were equally horrified at the
stories of anti-Semitism in
Soviet Russia. We were not atall
sure that protest could affect the
vast Russian monolith. We felt
compelled, however, to make the
effort. Current events in the
Soviet Union demonstrate that
intensive protest and publicity
over a period of time do achieve
a measure of success. It is with
this in mind that we request
your cooperation in a special
program designed to secure the
release of individuals known to
us to be political prisoners or
missing. You can do this by
writing directly to the president
and ambassador of Argentina,
the Organization of American
States, and officials of the Un
ited States government. Their
names and addresses as well as
specific individuals you may in
quire about are available by
calling or writing your regional

Street, Richmond, Va. 23230.
