Academy
Record Enrollment
Complex Supported And the Winners Are

The house committee, chaired
by Marc Weinglass, has cleared
a large area of brush, providing
more grassy running area for
the children. An area 25 x40 feet
is being paved and will be the
first “all weather” playground
for the Academy, suitable for
both basketball and volleyball.
Members of the committee are
involved in a “paint-up” and
“fix-up” campaign to make the
students’ surroundings more at
tractive.
Academy director, Rabbi San
ford l\icker, stated that 40
students are currently enrolled
for the school year which begins
Sept. 4th. TTiis is a significant
increase over last year’s open
ing figures.

New Rabbi Arrives
Beth Shalom has appointed
Rabbi Douglas Weber to its
pulpit. Rabbi Weber, 25, is a
graduate of State University of
New York - Albany and a third
year student at Hebrew Union
College in New York. In 1978 he
was a full-time teacher and
educator in Great Neck, N.Y.
Rabbi Weber and his wife,
Jessica, reside in Brooklyn, N.Y.
This will be the Rabbi’s first
regular pulpit.

Gleibermjan.
The Team’ Spirit award in
each age category went to the
following swimmers: 8 and un
der, Stephanie Davis and
David Thyer; 9-10, Dana
Perlin and Matthew Pera; 11-
12, Lisa Perlin and David
Malin; 13-14, Shelly Mendel
and Michael Phillips; 15-18,
Marla Shapiro and Jeff
Musler.
Special thanks go to Coach
Jim Oddo for the fine job he did
with the team this season. The
team had a record of three wins
and three losses and had ex
cellent spirit all season. With an
earlier start next season and
with an attempt to recruit all
eligible swimmers from the JCC
membership to the team. Coach
Oddo believes we can be com
petitive with the best teams in
the League. Special thanks also
to Mark Perlin, head of the
Swim Team Committee, to
Marilyn Shapiro and Harold
Josephson, both members of
the Committee, and to all
parents who supiK>i'ted the team
and who served willingly as
timers and judges.

Carolina Hebrew Academy
met last month to discuss the
development of a complex for
Jewish facilities ■ in. Charlotte
and the effect it would have on
the Academy. After a prolonged
discussion of the issues, the
board voted strongly in favor of
the concept. The presentation
was made by Herman
Blumenthal, Mark Bernstein
and Harry Lemer.
Academy President, Dr.
Stephen Fishman, characteriz
ed the complex as an opportuni
ty for the Academy to become
more visible within the Jewish
community. He also said that
communal facilities will
promote a greater degree of in
teraction between Academy
students and those attending
Temple schools.

At their recent meeting Tem
ple Beth Shalom’s Board of
Directors unanimously passed a
motion to actively participate in
the Conglomerate Community
Citizens Foundation con
sidering' acquisition of the 17
acres of land adjacent to the 24
acres owned by Temple Beth El.
“This project deserves our full
consideration and support in
the form of constructive ideas,
financing, and member par
ticipation. Realizing that ^th
Shalom is geographically the
closest active Jewish organiza
tion to the proposed land ac
quisition and development, we
appreciate the conglomerate
planning to move all Jewish ac
tivities into our back yard.”
Allan Oxman, president, said;
“Beth Shalom is now com-
plet ing major building
renovations, but our budget
could easily include financial
assistance to support this dream
that has been around for a lot of
years.”

quet. Robert Gleiberman
received the Robert Musler
Memorial Award. This award
goes to a senior member of the
team most exemplifying the
qualities of leadership, ability,
and team spirit.
The award for Overall Team
Spirit and Effovt went to Jef
frey Shapiro. Sue Oddo and
Michael Newman received the
trophies for Most Valuable
Swimmer, having earned the
most total points on the team.
Coach Oddo named Tracy
Josephson, Jody Mendel and
David Rosenfeld as the Most
Improved swimmers on the
team.
The Best Swimmer award,
which goes to that boy and girl
in each age category who receiv
ed the most number of points
during the season, went to the
following swimmers: 8 and un
der, Kelly Thyer and David
Fox; 9-10, Amy Bernhardt
and Ronald Malin; 11-12, Lisa
Josephson and Michael
Levy; 13-14, Debbie Ostrow
Academy Registration
Openings are still available in grades K-5 at the Hebrew
Academy, Charlotte’s commXmity day school. Children must
be 5 years old by Feb. 1 to be eligible for kindergarten.
Kindergarten meets firom 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., including lunch;
all other grades meet from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. .
Parents seeking more information or an appointment to
visit the school may call Rabbi Sanford Tucker, Academy
director, at 366-6390 or Sue Brodsky, admissions chairman,
364-5609.
The school, located at 1006 Sardis Lane is accredited by the
state’s Department of Instruction and is affiliated with the
Solomon ^hecter Day School Association of the United Syn
agogue. School opens September 4.
