( No. I20H VOL. 1 NO. 11 Charlotte, North Carolina December 1979 Award Presented To “The News” 1980 Federation Campaign Opens Federation Major Gift Givers Up 27% Attend cjf General Avraham Orly A1 Segal Alvin Levine Over $393,000 in pledges were made at the 1980 Major Gifts Dinner of the Men’s Federation Campaign. Alvin E. Levine and Shelton Gorelick, cochairmen of the Men’s Campaign, proudly announced that this represented an increase of 27% or $84,000 over that pledged in 1979 by these same donors. More than 60 attended the dinner held November 18 at Cafe Eugene. Through the generosity of Paul Ostrow the entire facilities of this outstand ing restaurant were placed at the disposal of the Federation. The tone of the evening was set by Aaron Gleiberman, Presi dent of Temple Israel, who prefaced the “hamotzeh” with a short reading from the Friday evening service. He called to mind the heritage of Israel and the obligation and right of those more fortunate to help those less fortunate. Principle speaker for the even ing was General Avraham Orly. Prior to the establishment of the state of Israel he was a member of the Irgun. Since 1948 he has served in many military capacities. In 1974 he was head officer of Personnel Department and from 1976-1979 served as coor dinator 3f government and Israel Defense F'orces Operation in the administered territories. He is a member of Israel’s negotiating committee with Egypt. . j General Orly emphasized the crises Israel faces both from within and without its borders. He contrasted the continuing desperate needs for adequate defenses with an inflation rate of over 100%. He called on the Jews of the U.S. to stand firm in their commitment to Israel’s survival. Alvin Levine then introduced A1 Segal. He cited Mr. Segal’s years of dedication; he has been the spark from which each Charlotte F'ederation Cam paign has caught fire. Mr. Segal is the recently retired Chairman of the Board of Pic N Pay and a member of the National Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal (UJA). In his remarks A1 Segal talked about the human issues at stake in 1980. He spoke ofthe plight of the Jews in Iran, of the continu ing need to help Russian Jewish immigrants, and of the cost of peace in Israel in terms of the necessary resettlement of Israelis from the Gaza to the Negev. It is with regret, therefore, that I confirm ttiat this present school year will be Rabbi 'fucker’s last as d irector of the Academy. In his four years of leadership Shindy Tucker has made a d xamatic and profound con- trnbution to the growth of the Academy. He has, himself, 1> ecome a symbol in the C^harlotte community of the at titude and temper which the /Vcademy envisions for its students. Certainly, in the hkistory of the school. Rabbi Ticker’s touch and care for each »f the students will be a high water mark. During the next weeks and months, the full resources of the Academy will be directed toward the recruitment of a new director, a director capable of cranrying forward in the spirit which Sandy Tucker has es- t;«blished these four years. The Education Committee, chaired b>y Donald Tepper, will begin the recruitment process immedia^ 1^, No effort will be spared in their search and the Academy Board is determined to find and retain the most outstanding candidate available. The highlight of the conven tion for the Charlotte delegation was the award presen ,ed in the CJF Public Relation" Competi tion to THE CHARLOTTE JEWISH NEWS. Our paper was one of four of approximately 100 submitted in the small city category chosen as best news paper with advertising. Copies of the paper were on display. (See editorial, page 2.) Priority items on the agenda included the Middle East peace process; expanding and allocat- ing Federation financial resources in a time of inflation; demographic changes in the Jewish community and World Jewry in the 1980’s. Chairman of the assembly was Lawrence H. Williams of Cleveland, Ohio (father of Wen dy Cohen of Charlotte). The GA brought together leadership from 190 Federations in the U.S. and Canada. CJF President Morton L. Mandel of Cleveland was the keynote speaker at the opening Plenary l^ssion. Leon riulzin. Chairman of the Jewish Agency, addressed the Assembly on “A New Era in Israel Diaspora Relations;” the Plenary on Saturday evening was devoted to the challenge of meeting human needs in a period of inflation and reces sion. Scholar-in-Residence for the GA, Dr. Irwin C. Cotier of McGill University Law School, participated in a variety of sessions.
