Over $393,000 in pledges were
made at the 1980 Major Gifts
Dinner of the Men’s Federation
Campaign. Alvin E. Levine and
Shelton Gorelick, cochairmen of
the Men’s Campaign, proudly
announced that this
represented an increase of 27%
or $84,000 over that pledged in
1979 by these same donors.
More than 60 attended the
dinner held November 18 at
Cafe Eugene. Through the
generosity of Paul Ostrow the
entire facilities of this outstand
ing restaurant were placed at
the disposal of the Federation.
The tone of the evening was
set by Aaron Gleiberman, Presi
dent of Temple Israel, who
prefaced the “hamotzeh” with a
short reading from the Friday
evening service. He called to
mind the heritage of Israel and
the obligation and right of those
more fortunate to help those less
fortunate.
Principle speaker for the even
ing was General Avraham Orly.
Prior to the establishment of the
state of Israel he was a member
of the Irgun. Since 1948 he has
served in many military
capacities. In 1973 he was
promoted to Brigadier General
and was also made commander

of the Suez Canal Western Area.
In 1974 he was head officer of
Personnel Department and
from 1976-1979 served as coor
dinator 3f government and
Israel Defense F'orces Operation
in the administered territories.
He is a member of Israel’s
negotiating committee with
Egypt. . j
General Orly emphasized the
crises Israel faces both from
within and without its borders.
He contrasted the continuing
desperate needs for adequate
defenses with an inflation rate
of over 100%. He called on the
Jews of the U.S. to stand firm in
their commitment to Israel’s
survival.
Alvin Levine then introduced
A1 Segal. He cited Mr. Segal’s
years of dedication; he has been
the spark from which each
Charlotte F'ederation Cam
paign has caught fire. Mr. Segal
is the recently retired Chairman
of the Board of Pic N Pay and a
member of the National Cabinet
of the United Jewish Appeal
(UJA).
In his remarks A1 Segal talked
about the human issues at stake
in 1980. He spoke ofthe plight of
the Jews in Iran, of the continu
ing need to help Russian Jewish
immigrants, and of the cost of
peace in Israel in terms of the
necessary resettlement of
Israelis from the Gaza to the
Negev. His soft-voiced, deeply
emotional plea coupled with

Rabbi Sanford Tucker, Prin
cipal of the North Carolina
Hebrew Academy at Charlotte,
h £8 announced that he and his
fainiily have decided to carry out
ttieir long-standing plan to
nnake Aliyah to Israel. It is with
regret, therefore, that I confirm
ttiat this present school year
will be Rabbi 'fucker’s last as
d irector of the Academy.
In his four years of leadership
Shindy Tucker has made a
d xamatic and profound con-
trnbution to the growth of the
Academy. He has, himself,
1> ecome a symbol in the
C^harlotte community of the at
titude and temper which the
/Vcademy envisions for its
students. Certainly, in the
hkistory of the school. Rabbi
Ticker’s touch and care for each
»f the students will be a high
water mark.
During the next weeks and
months, the full resources of the
Academy will be directed
toward the recruitment of a new
director, a director capable of
cranrying forward in the spirit
which Sandy Tucker has es-
t;«blished these four years. The
Education Committee, chaired
b>y Donald Tepper, will begin the
recruitment process immedia^
1^, No effort will be spared in
their search and the Academy
Board is determined to find and
retain the most outstanding
candidate available.
