AJE Film Series Temple Israel’s Adult Jewish Education will present its se cond film of the 1979-80 movie series on Dec. 16 at 8 p.m. “The Cantor’s Son,” a Yiddish film, made in 1940, represents a ma jor triumph for Yiddish cinema. It stars Moishe Oysher, Florence Weiss and Michael Rosenberg; there are English subtitles. Moishe Oysher, one of the greatest Cantors of all time, ex hibits a great cinematic per sonality, as well as a superb voice, in this film. “The Cantor’s Son” tells the story of a Jewish youth from a Polish village who comes to America where after many disappointments he achieves success. However, he returns to his parents and sweetheart in the Old Country. This is a moving evocation of the fading past of European Jewry. B’nai B’rith Women Charlotte Chapter On November 7th at Temple Israel seventy-five women attended Charlotte Chapter B’nai B’rith Women’s launch ing of its first annual Personal Giving Campaign. As the menorah was lit and the programs creatively presented many came forth and gave from their hearts. With each donation the flames appeared brighter, as did the hopes for the emotional ly disturbed children at the B’nai B’rith Women’s Children’s Home in Israel, the youth programs and the Anti- Defamation League. Over $1800 was generously given to the in itial campaign effort. At the meeting Elizabeth (Mrs. Walter) Klein, Henrietta Meltsner and Teri (Mrs. David) Cathcart became the newest life members of the chapter. life Membership ensures the success of BBW’s programs throughout the world not only for today, but for tomorrow. Chapter members presented an original musical which told the story of BBW. It was written and directed by Ann Langman, ably assisted by Arlene (Mrs. Michael) Shapiro and Susan (Mrs. Hy) Bruck and starred Sal ly (Mrs. Hy) Winokuer, Teri (Mrs. David) Cathcart, Vicki (Mrs. John) Hopkins, Sally (Mrs. Robert) Schrader, Marcie Weiner, Kim Small and Rhoda (Mrs. Aaron) Gleiberman. Narrator was Barbara (Mrs. Herman) Zigler. Several members of Ha lialah Chapter graciously appeared in an original dramatic presentation. These programs provided the impetus for the gift giving. TTie campaign effort will be continued through personal contact so that all will have the opportunity to make an invest ment in BBW’s future. ORT The National Convention of Women’s American ORT was recently held in Boston. The Charlotte Chapter was the proud recipient of a National Award for achieving the highest amount in over-subscription of financial assignment (alloca tion) for 1979. Competing for this honor were 73 other chapters. On Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of (jrayle Fein, 7330 Lancer Dr., a combination board and open meeting will be held. Rabbi Sanford Tucker, the guest speaker, will discuss problems and questions that may arise during this holiday season. A Chanukah gift ex change will also take place at this meeting. Our mem^rs will be busy this month at Ellman’s doing our annual gift wrap pro ject. AIKHT«IGHTUNE OFPRODUCTS FORDO-IT YDURSELFERS. AVAILABLE AT YOUR FAVORITE AUTOMOTIVE PARTS HOUSE. ^Pgumk.^ Mickey Aberman Judaism Institute In order to maintain an identi ty of our religion and heritage, Mickey Aberman AZA has initiated a three-part Judaism Institute. The program is not only planned for simple atten dance at services, but for actual participation. This along with an educational program will enlighten as well as stren^hen our members in their religion and its customs. The first part of this institute deals with attendance and par ticipation in services as a chapter. Beginning in August, 1979 our members have attend ed Minyan on a regular basis (every Tuesday and Thursday). This has enabled Minyans to be met on these nights, (^er 90% of the membership have par ticipated in this program, which has convinced us to continue our attendance as a group through out the year and hopefully as long as the chapter is in ex istence. Added to this program, our chapter will attend and par ticipate in Friday night services throughout the year. Chapter support has been incredible and had led to the success of our ma jor part of the Judaism Institute. 'l^e plans for the second and third parts are being finalized. They deal with learning more about the Jewish religion and its customs, and to help the Jewish institutions in our area (the temples, JCC, Hebrew Academy, etc.) with community service projects. Programs such as a Yiddish class, chapter seder and building a succah for a tem ple are just a few of the com ponents of the last phase. The chapter seder was initiated this past Passover and a succah was built this year at Beth Shalom. — Darren Mond, Religious & (Cultural Chmn. B’nai B’rith Lodge On Sunday, November 18, the Charlotte B’nai B’rith Lodge conducted a formal initiation of new members. This was the first such ceremony conducted in Charlotte and left all of the members, both initiates and older members, with a sense of the importance and history of B’nai B’rith, both international ly and in the Charlotte (im munity. Ed Sachs developed and conducted the ceremony. On Thursday, December 20 the C)harlotte Lodge will provide a unique program for its members, a dinner and basket ball game. Tickets have been ob tain^ for an exciting UNCC game and a pre-game meal will be held at a local restaurant. Hiis is a repeat of a most successful program begun last year. For ^rther information, contact Richard Goodman (366- 1705). On Christmas day, the Lodge will once again participate in the annual substitution. In this public service project a number of Jewish organizations get together and take over positions at the county jail and local hospitals, allowing Christian workers to take some extra time with their families on this their holy day. BBYO NEWS Chaverim BBG Shaklee A Name You Can Trust Food supplements, metics, personal care household products In mony with Nature. cos- arKj Har- Ellie Katz 364-7767 Wow! We have b^n so busy. We have been having slumber parties and meetings to write songs and work on our scrap book and newspaper for Winter Cultural Convention Nov. 30- Dec. 2 in Greensboro. Last year we received the highest award, the Spirit award. We are work ing hard to win it again this year. On Oct. 21st nine of our new members attended MIT/AIT convention. At this convention they learned the basics of BBYO. Recently we had a very successful attic sale and bake sale. We earned $140. The best part of the event was that almost every person in our chapter participated in some way. This month and next, we plan to hold programs with BBW, Chai BBG, and Mickey Aber man AZA. We are working hard to fulfill the folds of BBG. — Valerie Kort Devorah Hadassah Devorah-Hadassah recently celebrated their twentieth an niversary. The chapter par ticipated in Sabbath Service at Temple Israel and honored their past presidents. Tay Sachs Screening WHAT IS TAY SACHS DIS EASE? It is an inherited genetic disorder characterized by the absence of a specific enzyme called Hexosaminidase A. WHAT ARE THE SYMP TOMS? The infant will appear to be normal until 6 months of age. At this time, he loses all of his physical skills. IS IT ALWAYS FATAL? Yes, death usually occurs during the third year. WHAT CAN WE DO? Be test ed to see if you are a carrier. Ha Lailah Chapter of B’nai B’rith Women is sponsoring a Tay Sachs Screening Program to be held at the JCC on Sunday, February 17, 1980 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tay Sachs is an hereditary genetic disorder which is wide spread throughout the world but is much more common among persons of Ashkenazi Jewish origin whose ancestors came from the Russian-Polish border. In 1976 Ha Lailah Chapter held its first screening and tested ap proximately 130 people. Since the population of Charlotte is bo^ transient and growing, Ha Lailah Chapter feels that it will be to the community’s benefit to repeat this program. Dr. Sanford Benjamin of Mercy Hospital will be serving as Medical Director for the pro ject. Federation has allocated funds to Ha Lailah Chapter to make the project possible.
