TTie Charlotte Jewish Federa
tion has received a 2nd check in
the amount of $4000 from the
Clouncil of Jewish Federations,
which represents a portion of
the total 1979 Federal grant of
$11,000 for the resettlement of
Soviet Jewish refugees in 1978-
79.
In 1979, CJF is administering
a total of $25.2 million in
Federal funds, going to local
Federations on a 50-50
matching basis, for resettle
ment programs. One hundred
twenty communities in the Un
ited States are participating in
the CJF resettlement program.
Hie staff of the CJF Soviet-
Jewish Resettlement Pro^am
works with local communities in
applying for funds, and in plan
ning and implementing cost-
effective programs which max
imize the impact of both Federal
and community dollars.
Federal funds are used for
English language training
vocational and technical in
struction; job placement
maintenance and health care
and related acculturation ser
vices. Federations coordinate
this community-wide resettle
ment program with assistance
from (5jF.
Twelve Russian Jews arrived
in Charlotte from October 1,
1978 - September 30,1979 to be
resettled with the aid of Federal
^ant money provided by Coun
cil. Sally (Mrs. Robert) Schrader
is chairman of the local
resettlement committee.
Continuing its efforts to aid
communities in lowering per
capita resettlement costs, (Houn-
cil recently instituted a
guidelines project under the
supervision of a subcommittee
chaired by Henry Goodman of
Cleveland. Seven communities
have been visited, and others
contacted, to survey their
resettlement programs and
develop cost-cutting guidelines.
CJF has also awarded funds
from a special Federal grant to
develop demonstration resettle
ment programs that provide
effective services at minimum
cost. Fourteen proposals—from
11 local communities, two
national agencies and one state
group—have been approved.
A special questionnaire on
Jewish Identity has been
developed and distributed by
CJF to determine how Soviet
Jews are being absorbed
culturally and religiously in the
American Jewish community.
The Council of Jewish
Federations is the association of
more than 190 Federations,
Welfare Funds and Community
Councils which serve nearly 800
communities and embrace over
95 per cent of the Jewish popula
tion of the United States and
Canada.

Talking of “Mitzvahs” start
ing the New Year, how’s this?
Mr. Fred Stem gave us tickets
for six different Symphony C!on-
certs to be performed at the
Charles A. Dana Auditorium of
the Queens College. Dr. Stetner
who is President of the
Charlotte Community (Iloncerts
and a chairman in the music
department of Queens (College,
came to our meeting and gave
an interesting talk about the
selections to be played at the
concerts. Twenty people attend
ed the first performance and all
had a wonderful time.
And now the second Mitzvah.
Alan and Ruth Goldberg
remembered the problems Mr.
Cioldberg’s mother had in her
last years with transportation,
so they donated a fund to be
used for transportation when
the women are unable to secure
rides, like to this concert. Tliis
was a beautiful thing to do!
