Page 7—THE NEWS-October 1980 Cavalcade (Continued from Page 1) received the “Woman of the Year” Award by the Jamaica community for her many ser vices, in addition to the “Shalom Award” from the State of Israel for the sale of Israel Bonds. On the evening of Sept. 15th Ha Lailah Chapter’s Cavalcade was held at the JCC. A gourmet dinner was prepared and served by the chapter members who also presented an original skit evolving around the activities of BBW. Ha Lailah chapter was presented the Sidney Kussworm Award for the second con secutive year by Beverly Davis. Overall chairmen for the event for Ha Lailah were Rosanne (Mrs. Barry) Sklar and Barbara (Mrs. Robert) Bernhardt. On Tuesday, Sept. 16th, Charlotte Chapter’s (Cavalcade took place at Temple Beth El. An elegant brunch was served and a moving slide presentation on the BBW Children’s Home was viewed. Beverly Davis spoke eloquent ly on the survival of the Jewish community and emphasized the need for the continuance of B’nai B’rith youth services to ensure the survival of our heri tage in the generations to come. Sally (Mrs. Hy) Winokuer was presented a Life Membership by her husband in honor of their 32nd wedding anniversary. The quilt made by the Sr. Women was raffled and Ethel Goodhardt was the proud recipient of this lovely piece of handwork. Overall Chairman for the event was Susan (Mrs. Hy) Bruck. Alcoholism (Continued from Page 3) tablished in New York which led to retreats for alcoholics and their families, an increase in the number of synagogues opening their doors to Alcoholics Anonymous and Alanon groups and the inclusion of a Jewish component in the treatment of recovering alcoholics. Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles presented a forum on recogni tion and treatment of the dis ease for rabbis, social workers and educators. Jewish Family Service has held in-service training sessions for their social workers and para-professionals to help them recognize problems related to alcohol abuse and to be aware of agencies to which such clients can be referred. The research reveals that many of the alcoholics or their families did seek professional help for symptoms of the dis ease. Psychiatrists, psy chologists, medical specialists were visited along with rabbis and other Jewish professionals. Eklucation of these gatekeepers to recognize and make referrals may be the first step in alleviating the problem. Open ing synagogues to A.A. groups and incorporating elements of Jewish prayer into such groups is a second easily implement^ step which most communities can take. So you’re still waiting for the right mo ment. We know that girls under sikteen who confide in their parents are “substantially less likely” to have intercourse than their peers. Begin now to establish this important communication link with your child. This workshop will use a combination of large and small group participation 1^ by experienced facilitators. We plan to provide the kind of trusting atmosphere and experiences together where parents and kids will be able to explore and express their feelings and attitudes about human sexuality. Parents and kids will meet together and separately. Parents will meet Friday evening and Sunday morning. Saturday will kids only. Parents will leam about adolescent intellectual, sexual, and emotional development. They will develop skills in listening and in expressing thoughts and feelings about sex. Kids will increase their knowledge in the area of human sexuality and will have an oppor tunity to explore and express their feelings about human sexuality. We will provide an opportunity for parents and children to interact and practice those communication skills. There will be a series of “at home” exercises for families to do at two, four and six weeks after the workshop. We will contact families with a followup questionnaire eight weeks after the workshop. Vial of Life Imagine being and feeling alone and very ill, with just enough strength to dial 911 and call for emergency help before blacking out. What would the rescue squad know about you when it arrived? Suppose a friend or neighbor were with you. Could he or she tell the paramedics what kind of medicine you take regularly or if you are allergic to any drugs and who your doctor is? One way to answer “Yes” to these questions is to install the “Vial of Life” in your re- fhgerator. It is a standard plastic bottle, used for prescrip tion pills — most people have one around the house — with a sheet of paper folded inside, containing information about medicines, allergies and where to contact a relative or friend. The bottle may be attached, with a rubber band, to the under side of the top shelf of the re frigerator, or it may be put in side the refrigerator door. The key to the project is a bold sticker, produced by the American Red Ooss, to put on the refrigerator door to attract the attention of paramedics or anyone giving emergency aid to someone who is unconscious. The plastic vial should have the name of the person written boldly on the cap or on a stick-on label on the outside. Obviously, where there is more than one person, the names should clear ly show who is who, and each person needs a separate vial. But the vial is most valuable for persons who live alone or who spend long periods of time alone at home.
