Page 6-THE NEWS-January 1981 Hadassah Donor Features Fashions by Henrietta Wallace Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah’s annual donor- pledge luncheon was held November 19,1980 at the Gold/- Mint Rooms of the Radisson Hotel. The menu, fall flower table decorations, individual programs and fashions by Mon- taldo’s were elegant. Sandra (Mrs. Leon) Levine, president, presided; Jill (Mrs. Edwin) Newman was general luncheon chairman; Patty (Mrs. William) Gorelick was chairman of the fashion show; Ann Parish Corley was the commentator; the Loonis McGlohen Trio provided background music. Models for the fashion show were Miri (Mrs. Mel) Berzack, Patty (Mrs. William) (jorelick, Faye (Mrs. Daniel) Green, Carolyn (Mrs. Stuart) Hennes, Ruthie (Mrs. David) Kossove, Donna (Mrs. Norman) Levin, Vera (Mrs. Jack) Mendel, Elsa (Mrs. Martin) Multer, Paula (Mrs. Norman) Musler, Judy (Mrs. Mark) Perlin, Diane (Mrs. Richard) Rocklin, Marcia (Mrs. Paul) Simon, Carol (Mrs. Robert) Speizman, Judi (Mrs. Leonard) Strause, Sue (Mrs. Donald) Tepper and Carol (Mrs. Richard) Weiner. They were resplendent in evening gowns, suits, day-time dresses, sportswear, coats of rich purple, pastels, red, intermingled with outfits of black. Accessories were well selected. Varied colors were worn with white stockings. This ’n That The North Carolina Museums Council has given its annual award to Stuart Schwartz, curator of the Mint Museum of History, for excellence in maintenance of the Hezekiah Alexander House. • Marla Shapiro, daughter of Marilyn and Sol Shapiro, was elected president of the 2200 member freshman class at the Univer sity of Virginia • Newly inducted into fraternities at UNGCH are Darren Mond, son of Mr. & Mrs. Irving Mond, and Kenny Boxer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Larry Boxer (Zeta Beta Tau) and Ira Shapiro, son of Dr. & Mrs. Arnold Shapiro (Tau Epsilon Phi). • Walter Klein was recently installed as president of the Mid- Atlantic Council of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. He has also been named as a trustee of the Mint Museum. • For the past few years Irving Mond has been volunteering his services as a speaker on the Holocaust at various schools, churches and Masonic lodges. He recently spoke to classes at Randolph Junior High and Charlotte Latin School to very receptive audiences. • Linda (Mrs. William) Ashendorf has been appointed to a 15- member Housing Advisory Committee by Mayor Eddie Knox and the City Council. Linda is also vice chairman of Motion, Inc. and a member of the Democratic National (Dommittee. • Mindy Levine, daughter of Leon & Sandra Levine was elected to the National Honor Society at CJharlotte Latin School. • Congratulations to the Ostrovsky family and Ingrid Ehren- burg on receiving their U.S. citizenship. • Rinky Glanzman and Sultana Rosen, daughter of Murray & Estelle Rosen, have been inducted into Phi Kappa Phi honor society at UNCC. Glitter, glamour, grace of move ment marked “An Affair to Remember.” Israeli Wheelchair Basketball Champs The World Clhampion Israeli Wheelchair Basketball Team has completed its good will tour of the U.S., a smashing success thanks largely to the spon sorship of local Jewish Com munity Centers and the national auspices of JWB. The players are membeps of the Ilan Sports Club for the Handicapp^, a world pioneer in the wheelchair sports move ment and Israel’s leading wheelchair sports club. The Dan team was world cham pion in the years 1966-1969,1975 and 1980. It won the World Cup in 1975 and the European cham pionships in 1975, 1977 and 1979. During the 1980 Olympiad in the Netherlands, the Israeli disabled athletes won 13 Gold Medals, 17 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals. The Israeli athletes range in age from 23 to 37. They are students, professionals and businessmen, and many of them are proficient in more than one sport. Ten crates of silver, gold, bronze and brass ceremonial objects and textiles arrived in New York with the following stipulation; if, in 15 years, the Danzig com munity is reborn, the objects are to be returned; if not, they are to remain in America for the education and inspiration of the rest of the world. THE DANZIG COMMUNI TY DID NOT SURVIVE THE NAZIS. Its history is entrusted to each of us. An exhibit of the Danzig artifacts has been mounted and is being shown in selected locations throughout the world. Emory University in Atlanta is housing the exhibit for the Southeast Region of the United States. The Atlanta Jewish Federation has assumed responsibility for tours and education for surrounding com munities. On January 29, Women’s Division of the Qiarlotte Jewish Federation is organizing a one day trip to Atlanta to include a tour and film of the Danzig Ex hibit, a meeting with the Israeli Kindergarten Applications Applications are now being accepted for kindergarten, first grade as well as the other lower grades at the Academy. At the present time applications have been received from the parents of 11 children for next year’s kindwgarten class. ITie maximum number for this class will be 15. If apphcations are received for more they will be placed on the waiting list. For additional information please call Sue Brodsky, 364- 5609. UNICEF The children at the Academy raised $65 for UNICEF during Halloween. Chanukah Events December 2nd was devoted to the celebration of Chanukah. Special tefilot, Chanukah songs and games, a Hebrew play and an oratorio were among the events in the morning. In the afternoon the children made Chanukah objects and latkes. A candle lighting ceremony ended the day. On December 4th, 25 children from the Kiddie Comer Day School, Monroe Road, visited the Academy’s kindergarten. ITiey ate latkes, played dreidel and sang Chanukah songs. Rabbi Yossi Groner visited the school on December 5th and conducted a Chanukah program for grades 1-6. On December 7th 12 students from the Academy participated in the Jewish Community’s Chanukah Marathon. Consul General of Atlanta and lunch in the home of a past regional chairperson of Southeastern Region Women’s Division. The trip will be open to women making a pledge of $365.00 or more to the 1981 cam paign. llie trip is being publiciz ed under the slogan “A Dollar a Day for Danzig.” Asked to ex plain the phrase, major gifts chairperson Bobbi Bernstein repli^, “They gave their lives and entrusted us with the future of Judaism.
