As a Member-in-Training (MIT) of B’nai B’rith girls (BBC) 1 attend my first activity in BBYO the weekend of August 28-30 in Kings Moun tain. Approximately 60 old and potential new members boarded a bus at the JCC for a 45 minute drive to Kings Mountain. Wben we got there we had “icebreakers” which were a barrel of fun. “Entebbe” was the program for the first night. This historic happening occured not so long ago and the presentation made us think about how such a situa tion could have happened and hopefully will not happen again. Saturday it was time for leadership training. We got to learn about who we are and who people are. Then it was off to an anti-semitism program which scared me half to death. The “KKK” gave us a surprise visit (Michael Newman, Phil Saunders and Gary Lerner). You have never seen anybody as scared as all the MITs and AITs (Aleph-in-Training) were. We prayed that they will never find us. Boy were we glad that it was just our own AZA group as the KKK. Saturday night, the closing of the weekend, we participated in the Twig Ceremony. Boy — you have never seen everyone cry at once. The crying, of course, was because we’re all so sentimen tal. The food was great and, I was told, it was exceptional this weekend. I am looking forward to this year not only to be with my friends but to meet new ones and to be an active member of Chaverim BBG. Thanks go to Sherry Rosen and Gary Lerner for putting together the whole weekend and to all of the advisors: Tobey and Alan Silber, Maddye Stein, Hoel Montezinos, Jaffa, and Regional Director, Phil Saunders, for making Kings Mountain a very successful weekend. Jodi Mond Judaism Institute A Minority Child Workshop This is the fifth year of Ha Lailah Chapter’s Judaism In stitute and the fourth year of the Minority Child Workshop. The workshop, offered to teachers for recertification credit, is a four session program designed to inform the teacher of ways of dealing with the diversity of minority students now found in Charlotte schools with an emphasis on the Jewish child. The workshop begins Oc tober 29 at the Staff Develop ment center and continues for four consecutive Thursday. The session held on November 12 is at Temple Israel and is the Judaism Institute which is also open to local ministers and Sunday school teachers, and all Charlotte -Mecklenburg teachers who have not participated in the Minority Child Workshop. The Minority Child Workshop is led by members of Ha Lailah and community leaders. Through participation in the Judaism Institute and Minority Child Workshop, teachers become more aware of the dif ferent influences a Jewish child faces at home. It is hoped that one situation to be alleviated is a child not being excused from school for Rosh Hashonah and other major religious holidays. Your children’s teachers should be encouraged to par ticipate in this Judaism Institute and Minority Child Workshop. For more information contact Shelly Bregman at 364-1333. Raffle For the fourth year Ha Lailah will raffle a free year’s member ship to the JCC. You will receive a letter explaining the raffle which will be followed by calls made on October 18 and October 28. Raffle tickets are $1 each; a book of 12 is $10.
