Pag* IS - THE NEWS - February, 1982 BBW Charlotte Human Relations Award “A course, study, or pro gram designed to develop better interpersonal and in tergroup adjustments” is how Webster’s New Col legiate Dictionary defines human relations. To con sistently devote oneself to this task is truly a feat of recognition. Charlotte Chapter of B’nai B’rith Women recognizes such individuals by bestow ing upon them our coveted Human Relations Award. As an organization devoted to service, we are aware that we are fortunate to have many in our State who are worthy of this award. While many know the stringent criteria that a potential recipient must meet, we have also been ask ed how we determine to whom to grant this honor. Names are placed before the board at our November Boafd meeting. Those nominating individuals spend many months on research into the candidates’ backgrounds and qualifica tions. They also obtain creditable letters of endorse ment and recommendation. There could be as many names placed in nomination as there are individuals wishing to do so. In complete fairness to a potential con- didate, as well as to the creditability of the award, noone but the Chapter Presi dent has any knowledge as to the name or names of a potential nominee, unless it is imperative to seek background information. It is then decided as to whether the criteria for the award has been met by the candidate(s), to whom to grant the award, or whether it should be given at all. before pursuing the re maining formalities. This year’s nominee came to us with a voluminous list of credentials and qualifica tions which encompassed a multitude of activities, in- volvements and ac- complishments, in addition to a most impressive collec tion of letters of endorse ment as to why he is worthy of this honor. We are pleased to have the opportunity to present this year’s Charlotte B’nai B’rith Women’s Human Relations Award to Walter J. Klein. As Norman Olshansky. Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League, stated in his letter, “It is unusual to find an individual who devotes so much time and energies to fostering good will, positive human relations and community service.”, Rabbi Harold I. Krantzler wrote, “He stands out in Charlotte as one of the real forces for interfaith and interracial understanding.” Rabbi Richard K. Rocklin’s letter stated, “He is an asset to Charlotte, a credit to the family of Jews and a wonder ful citizen of this world.” The quotes from the many other letters received reiterated those of the above as well as noting his many tireless efforts and notewor thy accomplishments. Doug Mayes, noted televi sion journalist, will be the keynote speaker at the award luncheon to be held at Tem ple Israel on February 17 at 11:45 a.m. Reservations are required by February 12. Checks are payable to B’nai B’rith Women in the amount of $6.50 per person. Your check is your reservation.
