Page 12-THE NEWS Wovmb«r. 19B2 BBW Charlotte Chapter BB W Ha Laitah Light of the Future Charlotte Chapter’s Per sonal Giving luncheon took place at Temple Israel on October 6. The theme of the luncheon was “Light of the Future.” With a motif of Shabbos candles and a short program the point was made that BBW is striving to keep our Jewish heritage alive. Shining most brightly was guest speaker Anita Perl man, a past International BBW President as well as the founder of BBYO. Mrs. Perlman said, “Being in volved is the most important element in your life.” That we must work in our com munities, for helping the community is an important -*• way of combatting anti-sem- itism. We all must also strive to instill in our youth a love and understanding of our Jewish heritage. Good food, a meaningful program, and a wonderful speaker made for a bright day and a resolution to work for a brighter future for Judaism. ^ Put on a Happy Face Susan Bruck’s house was the site of one of our com munity projects “Pumpkins for Pediatrics.” On October 18 and 19 our members had the opportunity to display their creative talents by decorating styrofoam pump kins for tray favors for the- children in Presbyterian and Memorial Hospitals. Styro foam witches were also made to liven up the nurses’ sta tions. Imagination, lots of kibbitzing, bag lunches, and coffee and cake made for two enjoyable get-togethers. The pumpkins and witches were then delivered to the hospitals for Halloween by “Ricky the Raccoon” and “Terri the Clown.” It was great to see the smiles on the children’s faces when they saw “Ricky” and “Terri.” Candidates' Forum For the second consecutive year Charlotte Chapter and the JCC have given the Jewish community a chance to hear and meet the candi dates. On October 20 the sheriff candidates and county candidates put forth their opinions and entertain ed questions. On October 27 those running for State off ices had their chance. Over coffee and cake after the for mal presentations there was time to meet the candidates and ask any additional questions. It is very important to our future that the Jewish people learn more about politics and if not actively participating, at least vote in an informed manner. Parents, It's Time To Talk Currently, Charlotte Chapter and the JCC are sponsoring a course for parents on teenage sexuality and how to deal with it. The four session course started on October 21 and will end on November 11. Facilitators No Minimums — Free Delivery The Complete Paper Warehouse Open to the Public Boxm, Baga. Tap*. Can • Linara. Relief is Just A Massage Away Wednesday evening, Nov ember 3, will be our next general membership meet ing. We are fortunate to have Cheryl Spangenthal show us all how to massage our feet in such a way as to relieve the tension in the other parts of our bodies, a lesson we could all use. The meeting will be at the Meadows Club house and coffee and cake will be served. For more in formation call Reggie Wittlin at 847-7090 or Susan Doobrow at 542-6101. Arosa House Hopefully, in the near future, the Family Support Center will be opening a house for battered children on Arosa Avenue. The house will be different from any other facility in the country for battered children in that the parents of the children will be working daily with them to help bring about a rehabilitation of the parents and a mutual understanding between the children and parents. Charlotte Chapter has pledged to help fix up the facility before the children move in and also to en courage the Chapter mem bers to volunteer on an in dividual basis to help the Family Support Center in Arosa house once the child ren have moved in. The Chapter will be collecting new or used fur- nishings, children’s clothing, toys and linens for the house. If you have any thing to give, have an in terest in helping to set up the house, have an interest in working with the Family Support Center, or would like further information, please call Jane MacEntee at 332-6925 or Linda Binnick at 552-1435. Coming soon...GIFT WRAP!! Support Our Organizations' Activities Personal Giving Ha Lailah’s Personal Giv ing dinner was held Tuesday evening, October 5 at 7 p.m. at Temple Beth El. The love ly evening began with a delicious dinner prepared and served by several members in the chapter. Other members served as table hostesses and took part in a Personal Giving presen tation. Anita Perlman, founder of B’nai B’rith Girls and past International Presi dent of B’nai B’rith Women, was the guest speaker. Mrs. Perlman spoke about the im portance of B’nai B’rith Women in our own communi ty and on a national and in ternational level. She made it abundantly clear that in B’nai B’rith Women there is a place for each individual to become involved and that this involvement is the ingre dient that makes B’nai B’rith Women a vital organization. The members in attendance enjoyed and were moved by her speech and Personal Giving was a tremendous success. Hunter House Work-out Class On October 26 the girls from Hunter House were treated to a sample “work out” session by one of the in structors from the Work-Out Studio. The session was geared towards getting back in shape after the birth of the baby and the girls thoroughly enjoyed the exer cise and the helpful hints. Members from the chapter brought nutricious and low calorie snacks for the exer cisers to munch on after the session was over. Minority Child Workshop Ha Lailah’s Minority Child Workshop began on October 14 and will be held through November 4. The first two workshops were held at the Jewish Communi ty Center and over twenty- five teachers from the Charlotte area Public School system and various com munity organizations were in attendance. The workshops, led by members of the chapter focused on the minority child and his or her special needs in the school setting. Special time was devoted to the Jewish child to teach these community representatives about the Jewish religion and tradi tions and how this specifical ly affects this particular child. On October 28 the Judaism Institute was held at Temple Israel. This evening was an integral part of the Work shop but was open to all members of both the Jewish and non-Jewish community. The evening began with a brief presentation by Rabbi Richard Rocklin who spoke about the various symbols in the synagogue and Judaism in general. All in attendance were then invited downstairs where members of Ha Lailah were stationed at different tables representing each Jewish holiday and other Jewish events. Each person was given a booklet explain ing the various holidays and then were able to circulate around the room and see the various holiday symbols and ask questions. One of the more interesting aspects of the evening was the refresh ment table. This table was laden with traditional foods prepared by the member ship. What an interesting way to introduce the non- Jewish community to the many delicious Jewish foods. The last workshop will be held on November 4. Raffle Ha Lailah will be kicking off their 6th annual fund raiser for a free membership to the Jewish Community Center beginning this month. The monies received from the raffle will benefit the many service projects that B’nai B’rith Women support. Some of these are the Anti-Defamation League, the B’nai B’rith Children’s Home in Israel, and the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization A book of twelve tickets will be $10 or $1 per ticket.
