PagcS-THE NEWS-Nov«mb«r, 1982 By Norman Olshansky Regional Director Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith During the several years that I have written this col umn I have never attempted to review a film. I recently had occasion to view a special film which should be brought to your attention. With all of the negative press and propaganda directed towards Israel, it was a truly uplifting ex perience to view the film “Zubin and the IPO.” Zubin Mehta is the principal con ductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and is the music director for life of the IPO, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. The film is a dual ex perience. On the one hand there are musical ex periences portrayed which include not only the or chestra but highlights guest artists including Isaac Stern, ■ world famous concert violinist; Itzhak Perlman, the brilliant Israel-born violinist; and Leonard Bern stein, one of the master con ductors of all times. Isaac Stern, in the film, says of the IPO, “They have a kind of soaring exuberance, a quickness and an agility that is remarkable. When they want to, they can outplay anybody.” On the other hand the film also is an excellent way of learning about the history of Israel from pre-statehood days on, as seen through the ForTneKecora development of the or chestra. As with the new state, the orchestra, in the beginning, was only a dream. Bronislaw Huberman, a world famous violinist who left Europe for sanctuary in Palestine after WWl, is most responsible for the early beginnings of the orchestra. As Hitler rose to power, great musicians were forced out of work and found refuge in the Palestine homeland. In 1936, their inaugural con cert was performed, con ducted by the legendary Ar turo Toscanini. This perfor mance served as a major statement of the Maestro’s protest against the rise of na tional socialism. Leonard Bernstein recalls in the film his first ap pearance with the orchestra in 1974: “It was the genius orchestra of all times, main ly composed of ex-concert masters, refugees. And if you have a violin section fill ed with concert masters you can’t go wrong.” Itzhak Perlman also adds comments including “every kid who played the violin in Israel has a dream. I had the same dream; to play one day with the Israel Philhar monic.” The film, which is part of the dateline Israel television series written and directed by Arnold Forster, premiered on NBC-TV. In a New York Times review of the film, John O’Connor said that it was “timely and thoroughly absorbing.. “Zubin and the IPO,” a film of beautiful music and an important statement PYRAMID PRODUCTIONS MICHAEL MONTELLA Music Er Entertainment Counselor 394-3863 or 542-8177 "Be a guest at your own party" 4813 Rounding Run Road Matthews, NC 28105 A FAIRLYN LEVINE 542-6027 LILA JOSEPHSON 552-0209 Party Consultants FOB AU YOUR TRAVEL NEEDS ..from a quick business trip to New York to a leisurely vacation anywhere in the world...
