Special Course On Saturdays beginning October 8, a course in Reading and Understanding Prayers will be offered at the home of Eleanor Weinglass, 1030 Pineborough Rd. Classes are from 2-4 p.m. HA LAILAH JCC MEMBERSHIP RAFFLE Although the walls of the JCC no longer stand, the pro grams and classes of the JCC will continue. So again this year we ask for your support. Each year Ha Lailah Chapter raffles a free year’s membership to the JCC. This year we will do the same. "“J Hanooipvi ivoao mv wviswofo ▲ 3tS-MOO ProfsMioiislhr IXIiniisd hy Owua atlamtic Ashendorf Memorial Concert To Be At Temple Israel The second annual Rosalie Citron Ashendorf Memorial Concert will be held at Temple Israel on Sunday, October 16, at 8 p.m. This year’s concert will John Pickett feature soprano Joan Fuerst- man of New York City, (former ly of Charlotte) and pianist John Pickett of Charlotte. A reception will follow the Beth El To Sponsor ^*The Chosen*’ weekly. The course is free— participants will take turns bringing cake for after class socializing. Call the class in structor, Eleanor Weinglass, at 536-4474 for more informa tion. Reserve the evening of Oc tober 19 or October 20 for a special event in the Charlotte Jewish Communi- ty. The movie, “The Cfhosen” will reappear in Charlotte for two, that’s right, just two special show ings. Sponsored by Temple Beth El, “The Chosen” will run at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oc tober 19, and at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 20 at the Queen Park Cinema. These will be the only per formances of this movie and it will not be available to the general public. Following each presentation a dessert social will be held at Fellowship Hall in Temple Beth El for the moviegoers. Ticket prices are $6 per per son and the price includes the movie and social; $5 of this is tax deductible. The Jewish Monthly Magazine describes “The Chosen” as a “positive Jewish film.” Based upon the novel by Chaim Potok, the movie stars Robby Ben son, Rod Steiger, Max imilian Schell and Barry Miller. “The Chosen” has won awards for best film and best actor (Rod Steiger) at the Montreal Film Festival. In her review for the Jewish Monthly, Patricia Erens says “...what sets ‘The Chosen’ apart from so many films on American Jewish life is the avoidance of cliches and stereotypes. It speaks to both adults and children — adolescents can certainly identify with the two young protagonists.” Tickets are available at Temple Beth El, 1727 Pro vidence Road or through the Temple Sisterhood or Men’s Club. Avraham Burg To Speak At Cominiifiity Forum Avraham (Avrum) Burg, social activist and leading peace advocate, will speak to the Charlotte Jewish Com munity on American - Israeli Relations: The Current State of Affairs. Mr. Burg works as a Consultant to the New Israel Fund on Relationships bet ween Israeli Community groups and American Jews. Avrum Burg is the son of Interior Minister Yosef Burg, who is the head of the National Religious Party and has been ui the Israeli Cabinet longer than any other member. Avrum Burg is also a Leader ship Fellow working on the Relationship between Zionism and Judaism. He is a student of Industrial Design at the Bezalel Art Academy. His speech to the communi ty will be on Tuesday, October 25 and 8:15 p.m. at Temple Beth El. The program will provide a question and answer period following his major remarks. A reception will be held in the social hall after the discussion. The program is sponsored by the Community Relations Committee of the Charlotte Jewish Federation. Mr. Burg is a somewhat con troversial figure on current Israeli policies. This program promises to bo-an educational experience which should spark a thought provoking discus sion.
