Rabbi Zvi-Elimelech Sch* oenfeld recalls the incident in a book he has written on his wartime experiences. Chinese Not Anti-Semitic BEIJING, China (JTA) - Despite the People’s Republic of China’s dismal foreign policy record with regard to Israel, there is no Chinese anti- Semitism here. Neither Jews nor anti-Semitism exist for the citizens and government of China. • BONN (JTA) - Harm Menken, a 46-year*old teacher at the government-run naviga tion school in Stade, Lower Saxony, has been ordered dis missed for disseminating anti- Semitic propaganda in 1979. Menken claimed that the gas chambers were a lie and, in ar ticles in local newspapers, ac cused Jews of preparing a plot to annihilate the German peo^ pie. Government authorities in Lower Saxony took no discip linary measures against Meoken until forced to by public opinion. When the mat ter was finally brought to the court, the punishment asked for was a 10 percent cut in his salary for an 18-month period. The panel of judges ordered him fired. Antisemitism In France PARIS (JTA) - Anti- Semitism in contemporary France is increasingly hiding under the guise of anti- Zionism or political opposition to Israel, according to a study on modem anti-Semitism in France. Traditional rightwing anti-Semitism “has been seriously diminished” al though it still plays an occa- siond role, mainly in attacking prominent Jewish personali ties. “The real danger, nowadays, stems from certain leftist , groups for whom the State of Israel is the root of all evil.” • PARIS (JTA) — Recently a terrorist on a motorcycle hurl ed a bomb into the Jewish- owned Oree du Bois restau rant in the fashionable Bois du Boulogne section injuring 30 patrons, several of them children. • PARIS (JTA) - Frederic Oriach, a pro-Palestinian left- wing extremist linked to ter rorists here, was s^tenced to five years’ imprisonment by a Paris court. Oriach, 30, was carrying a list of Israeli offices in Paris and the addresses of French companies doing business with Israel when he was ar rested. Four of the businesses had been targets of terrorist bombings. Leaflets claiming responsibility for the bomb ings were found in Oriach’s home. Illinois Mandates Public Disclosure Of Gifts To State Universities By Foreigners CHICAGO (JTA) - Illinois has become the first state to mandate public disclosure of gifts made to state univer sities by foreign governments or foreign persons. “In enacting Public Act 83*0641, Illinois has taken substantial steps to protect its schools from b^ming educa tional conduits for the pre judices or biases of certain foreign donors.” The Act re quires disclosure for all monies in excess of $100,000 made to state institutions of higher education by foreign govern ments or individuals., The source and purpose of each gift, and any conditions on its use, are included in the disclosure. UJA Production Wins Gold Medal At International Film—TV Festival NEW YORK (JTA) - “Partners in Faith,” a multi- media production written, compost, directed and pro duced by Issachar Miron, United Jewish Appeal creative consultant, won the top Gold Medal at the 26th Annual Awards competition of the In ternational Film and TV Festival. It was chosen from more than 4,000 entries sub mitted by film makers from some 40 countries. “Casting Light,” and “San Francisco, My San Francisco, Is Jerusalem by the Golden Gate,” films also written, com posed and directed by Miron, won Bronze and Silver Medals, respectively, at the 25th Festival in 1982. Miron is a laureate of the American Society of Com posers, Authors and Publish ers’ Deems Taylor award for creative writing, and a winner of Israel’s Engel Music Prize. Wolf Foundation Prize Winners In Mathematics Announced TEL AVIV (JTA) - A Chinese-American and a Hungarian are to share the $100,000 Wolf Foundation Prize in mathematics for 1983/84. Prof. Shiing Chem, of the University of California in Berkeley, was cited for his outstanding contributions to “global differential geometry, which have profoundly in fluenced all mathematics.” Prof. Paul Erdos of the Mathematical Institute of the Himgarian Academy of Scien ces in Budapest, considered a “roving ambassador of mathe matics, “having lectured throughout the world, was nominated for his “numerous contributions to number theory, combinatorics, pro bability, set theory, and mathematical analysis, and for personally stimulating methe- maticians the world over.” He lived principally in the U.S. between 1938 and 1954.
