The Puriiti Express
Page 17-THE NEWS-April, 1984
A crowd of over 250 children
and adults rode along with the
Purim e^qpress. Everyone join
ed in dapping and stomping to
the tunes of Jewish country
music, played by “Dovid
Lazerson and his country
shtick.” The crowd grew en
thusiastic as they were sing
ing “I’m proud to be a Jewish
boy/girl.”
The audience was capti
vated by Rabbi Yitzy Erps,
the famous storyteller with a
thousand voices, who took
them to a faraway land where
an Arab sheik was about to
drive the Jews out of his coun
try and they were saved on the
last day by a ton of ice cream.
With his incredible talent he
imitated all the characters as
if they were all on stage.
Everyone enjoyed the delici
ous sandwiches and hot
knishes that were served
before the show in the lobby.
There was a Jewish book
display with many brochures
published by Lubavitch of
North Carolina.
All the participants received
Purim kits which contained
food for Mishloach Monos and
coins for charity.
The show, which was spon
sored by Lubavitch of N.C., at
tracted people from other com
munities in the Carolinas. A
busload of children arrived
from Columbia, S.C., and
many cars came from
Charleston and Asheville.

Verily A Viable Vinkle
By Elkie Tulman
On Wednesday evening,
Feb. 1, close to forty people
came together at Temple Beth
Shalom to leam, live and love
Yiddish. Much credit for the
great success of this first Yid
dish Vinkel goes to Baila Pran
sky, Raizel Luski, Lyba
Pollard and the fine “faculty”
consisting of Gedalya Acker
man and Avram Luski, and
“klezmer” (musician) Moishe
Bienstock.
After the Yiddish name tags
were distributed, and the
“feerers” (leaders) presented,
all those present were asked to
introduce themselves with the
phrase *‘Ich bin geboren
gevome in ...” (I was bom in
....), which proved to be a real
tongue twister for some of the
novices. Others who were
more experienced in “mama
loshen” (Yiddish) rattled off
sentences with the glibness of
an Isaac Bashevis Singer.
However, the majority fell
somewhere between these two
extremes.
The group then divided into
two informal “classes” for ap
proximately 45 minutes.
Beginners gathered ’round
Gedalya Ackerman to leam
how to understand and carry
on a simple Yiddish conversa
tion (guaranteed to help
anyone understand the punch
line in a Yiddish joke!). The
more advanced Yiddishists
listened to Avram Luski read
in his inimitable style selec
tions from prose and poetry.
This was followed by a lively
discussion by all in
“Yinglish.”
During the “iberrise” (inter
mission), everyone came
together for a “nash un far-
brengen” (sweets and social
exchange) with each other.
This was followed by a Yid
dish sing-along with Moishe
Bienstock and his “Guitar”
(yes, that’s Yiddish!).
The evening ended with the
viewing of “lichtbilder”
(slides) furnished by YIVO,
and narrated by Avram Luski
and Yona Pransky, which
depicted Jewish life in pre-war
Poland.
Two couples who traveled
all the way from Winston- ^
Salem and Greensboro to join
us for the evening agreed it
was a “fargenigen” (pleasure).
If you have found the above
to be a painless lesson in this
most expressive and colorful
international linguistic
passport known as Yiddish,
then you’re a perfect can
didate for the next Yiddish
Vinkel. Plan to “kum un far-
breng mit undz!” (come and
enjoy with us!)
