Lilith Magazine Charges
Pornography Contributes
To Violence Against
Women In Israel
JEWISH WORLD - The
prevalence of pornography in
advertising, films and other
aspects of popular culture in
Israel is contributing to a
sharp increase in violence
against that country’s women,
three Jewish women leaders
charged at a press conference
sponsored last week by Lilith,
the Jewish women’s
periodical.
The current situation in
Israel seems to confirm this
research. Parallel to the up
surge in pornographic adver
tising and pornographic films,
including many with violent
themes, Israel has witnessed a
sharp increase in incidences of
rape.
So serious has the situation
become that late last year,
Israel’s army issued an order
prohibiting women soldiers
from hitchhiking. From time
to time, suggestions even have
been raised that there be a
curfew for Israeli women.
Schneider recalled former
Prime Minister Golda Meir’s
comments that, if anything,
the prevalence of rape should
mandate that a curfew be ex
tended only to Israeli men.

Irish Jewry Dwindling
NEW YORK (JTA) - Of
ficial census statistics from
Ireland indicate a sharp
decline in the country’s Jewish
population during the past
decade. Figures released by
the Irish census bureau in
Dublin show that for the
period 197M981 the Jewish
population had dropped some
20 percent at a time that the
general population had in
creased by 15 percent. In
1971, census records indicated
that there were 2,128 Jews in
the country. The most recent
data cites an estimated figure
for the Jewish population be
ing between 1,500-1,900.
Israel Cost-of-Living Rises
TELAVIV (JTA) - The
cost-of-living index rose by
14.9 percent in January, the
highest increase ever for that
month and several points
above what the Treasury had
expected. The announcement
by the Central Bureau of
Statistics drew an immediate
response from Histadrut
Secretary General Yeruham
Meshel, who predicted that if
the index continues to rise at
its present rate, inflation in
1984 will reach 429 percent.
The c.o.l. index has risen by
208 percent over the past 12
months.
