A Revieiv: **An Evening of Nostalgia**
By Baila Pransky
The publicity for “An Even
ing of Nostalgia” with Zalman
Baumgarten was pure 20th
century hype, with dial-a*
selection on the Lubavitcher
Torah Talks line, frequent
mailings and newspaper ads.
What was enacted on the Cen
tral Piedmont Community
College stage on Sunday even
ing, April 1, was the promised
nostal^a oif yesteryear.
Arriving in Charlotte from a
successful concert tour of
Guatemala barely two hours
before his scheduled perfor
mance, the 25-year-old tenor
appeared calm and self-assur
ed as he began his program of
Jewish classics, Yiddish
favorites and masterpieces of
the synagogue.
Bom into a musical family,
the Brooklyn, New York
native was schooled in the
Lubavitch Yeshiva and under
its auspices has concertized
throughout North and South
America.
Lubavitch Rabbi Yossi
Groner introduced each of his
cousin’s selections with anec
dotes and rabbinic interpreta
tions. Accompanied on a mini
keyboard by the talented Lin
da Kent, a graduate of the
North Carolina School of the
Arts, Baumgarten's repertoire
heavily favored cantorial
melodies. The suppleness
necessary in expressing the
musical nuances and fluidity
that typifies the skill of a Haz-
zan (cantor) as he fulMs the
role of emissary to G-d, ad
mirably suited Baumgarten’s
wide vocal range. Outstanding
in his segments of Yiddish
melodies and Jewish classics
was a spirited arrangement of
the fan^ar "Ah Chazzen Oif
Shabbas.”
Despite the barren, austere
environs of Central Pied
mont’s stage, which detracted
considerably from the in
timate quality of Baumgar
ten's material, the less than
half filled auditorium warmed
to the earnest young tenor
and, at the conclusion of his
concert, brought him back
again and again for encores.
There is considerable pro
mise in Baumgarten’s musi
cianship and with professional
guidance from more seasoned
Hazzonim his potential for
growth as a Canton/Performer
is virtually unlimited.
