Consul General of Israel to Speak
Yosef Yaakov, Consul
General of Israel, Washington,
will speak at Temple Beth El
on May 20 at 8 p.m. This pro
gram is being sponsored by
the B’nai B’rith Lodge and
BBYO and is open to the
public with no charge.
Mr. Yaakov was born in
Shanghai, China. He attended
the British School; his law
studies were interrupted by
the Jap£inese occupation. He
was a news correspondent for
UPI during the Chinese Civil
War and was a broadcaster at
an American radio station in
the Far East.
He immigrated to Israel
during the War of Indepen
dence. There he served two
and a half years in the Defense
Forces; then entered govern
ment service (Prime Minister’s
office: Broadcasting) and
visited leading networks in the
U.S. and Europe.
Transferred to the Israel
Foreign Ministry in 1962, he
served as Consul (Information)
in New York, as member of
Israel Delegation to UN (1968)
and then chief assistant in the
Information Division in the
Ministry.
In 1971 he was appointed
Counsellor at Israel Embassy,
Ottawa, and subsequently
Counsellor at Embassy in Lon
don. He has been Acting
Director, Diaspora Affairs
Division at Foreign Ministry
and Deputy Director, North
American Affairs Division.
He is meirried and has two
children.

Ha Lailah Chapter of B’nai
B’rith Women celebrated the
installation of the ’84-’85
Board with a spectacular din
ner at Proposition XLV on
April 8.
Lynne Sheffer began the
evening’s program with her
personal thanks to the ’83-’84
Bo^d for a superb job and
then welcomed those members
of the Charlotte Chapter and
Avodah Council in attendance.
Florence Widis, outgoing
president, expressed her deep
appreciation to all who helped
and supported her when she
needed it most. Patti Weisman
dismissed the old Board
members and Peggy Gartner
installed the new Board. The
new officers are: Sara Schreib-
man, president; Vicki Neu
mann, administrative v.p.;
Lisa Teitelzweig, communica
tions v.p.; Wendy Rosen,
membership v.p.; Brenda
Manes, community volunteer
services v.p.; Lynne Sheffer,
programming v.p.; Margie
Hyde, recording secretary;
Ellen Goldstein, financial
secretary; Geri Lit, treasurer;
Florence Widis, counselor;
Debbie Weinstein, bulletin
editor.
Sara Schreibman, as the
new president, shared her ex
pectations, hopes and desires
for Ha Lailah. She sees»the up
coming year as one of tremen
dous support, enthusiasm and
eagerness on the part of all the
members of Ha Lailah.
Sara was very surprised
when Shelly Bregman present
ed her with a gift from her hus
band and parents — a lifetime
membership to B’nai B’rith

BBYO — Spring Membership Drive Begins
Charlotte BBYO has started
its annual spring membership
drive. The Charlotte youth
group will be recruiting Jewish
boys and girls age 14 and older
to join B’nai B’rith Youth.
BBYO has already planned
monthly progreuns and socials
for the new members this sum
mer. Plans for the fall include
our annual King’s Mt. week
end, N.C. New Members Con
vention, N.C. Winter Cultural,
and monthly socials and
programs.
BBYO has made great
strides this past yeeu-, and
they have high expectations
for the upcoming year. BBYO
hopes that all eligible youth
will take this opportunity to
join with other Jewish youth
and have a rewarding ex
perience in B’nai B’rith Youth.

Women’s American ORT’s
April open meeting, held at
the home of Kathy Katz,
featured a slide show on ORT
education and a talk by school
board candidate Arthur Grif
fin on education in the
Charlotte public schools.
Refreshments were favorite
Passover desserts served by
board members.
ORT’s booth at the Israeli
Independence Day celebration
featured its educational pro
grams in Israel. Special
thanks to Marci Mehlman,
program v.p., for coordinating
the display. Members are in
vited to a pre-planning
meeting for next year’s ac
tivities on May 16. The ORT
bulletin will have the time and
location of this meeting, or call
Dorothy Shapiro, 542-0601,
for more information.
The following events are
planned for June: Planning
Conference on June 6 at which
goals for the 1984-85 year will
be set; Bowl-a-Thon for
couples on June 9, which for
$10 donation entitles each cou
ple to bowling, prizes for high
scores and going out for pizza;
Installation Banquet on June
20 at which new officers will be
installed and members achiev
ing Honor Roll status will be
honored.
