Charlotte Chapter BBW

The chapter, trained and
overseen by Helen Jackson of
the Services for the Blind,
screened 3rd and 4th graders
for amblyopia at Temple Israel
on March 29 and 30.
On April 12, Meryl Elko,
Jean Rosner, Beth Linderman,
Susan Coen, Linda Binnick
and Steve Taylor worked with
the 16-year olds and up at the
Special Olympics outdoor
events. The gorgeous weather
and inspiring work made for a
special day.
On May 2, 30 members
came to a kitchen shower for
the North Carolina Hillel
House in Chapel Hill. The gifts
came from the proceeds of
March’s “Color Me Beautiful”
luncheon and are to furnish
Hillel’s kosher kitchen. After
bmnch was served. Rabbi
Fisher, director of N.C. Hillel,

chairperson, spoke to us on
Hillel’s function and services,
giving us enlightening infor
mation. They glowed when
they saw the gifts. It was a
wonderful event of mutual
exchange.
Conference
The Charlotte Council, host
of the Mid-Atlantic Regional
Conference on May 19-21 at
the Marriott/Tyvola, took care
of registration, the hospitality
room and gave minibus tours
of the city for the women who
attended from five states.
An honor presentation open
ed the conference and set the
pace for a high caliber two
days. Susan Bruck, Charlotte
chapter Past President and
inmiediate Past Chairperson
of the region, present^ the
**Life Enrichment Award” to
Jeanne Bohn of WSOC. This
followed a program on the
theme of “Dolls for Demo
cracy,” which profiled Mrs.
Bohn’s achievements and con
tributions in media, women’s
issues and volunteer work.
The following two days were
filled with stimulating and in
formative workshops and
panel discussions on latchkey
children and adolescent
sexuality.
Sunday’s luncheon featured
the Hon. Ida Ruben, a member
of the Maryland House of
Delegates and Past Interna
tional Vice President BBW,
who spoke on the role of
women in politics. Sunday
night’s award banquet gave
special recognition to those
who have made outstanding
strides in the areas of com
munity volunteer services,
fundraising, membership, pro
gramming, projects and com
munication. A ceremony to
honor Life Members, held on
Monday, concluded the
conference.
Osmond Family Telethon
Our chapter was one of
many organizations answering
phones for the June 3 Osmond
Family Telethon cohosted by
Laura Quinn and Mike McKay
at WBTV and benefitting
Memorial Hospital pediatric
services and rehabilitation in
Charlotte. The Osmonds
selected our city and are work
ing 40 minutes to WBTV’s 20
minutes in the quest of
contributions.

school for a class in French
Cuisine on July 11 at 7 p.m.

be announced) and a Fall
fashion forecast meeting on
August 31.

The final social fundraiser
for this year was a Bowl-A-
Thon on June 9 held at Park
Lanes.
All members are cordially in
vited to attend the annual In
stallation Banquet for our new
officers on June 20 at the
Barley & Rye Restaurant. The
1984-85 officers will be: Presi
dent, Marci Mehlman; VP
Progranuning, Lydia Kohn;
VP Special Projects, Sue Ett;
VP Education, Madelyn
Moore; VP Membership,
Dorothy Shapiro; Treasurer,
Kathy Katz. Also at the ban*
quet we will honor other of
ficers, chairmen and members
who have contributed their
time and support to ORT this
year. Please make plans now
to attend to make this a truly

Even though we won’t have
any schedule meetings dur
ing July or August, we will be
sponsoring two bake sales at
the JCC and a membership tea
for new members. More details
about these will be printed in
future Bulletins. Many thanks
go to everyone for all of their
help in all of our activities this
past year. There were many in
teresting and exciting pro
grams and activities this year
and we owe their success to
you!

Young Couples
Club
Temple Israel Young
Couples Club has had a super
few months! We grew to over
thirty couples following our
membership event, a cocktail
party at Kathy and Mark
Katz’s home on March 17.
March 23 we participated in
the service at Temple Israel
with members hosting the
Oneg Shabbat.
A group Seder was held on
April 22 at David and Judy
Miller’s. Led by Paul Putter-
m^, we all participated and
enjoyed it so much that this
will become an annual event.
May 19 the club held the
first pay-as-you-go-event of
the year. It b^an at 2001/VlP
disco and ended at Valentino’s
for dessert and coffee. In June
our second open event will be
a family picnic. This party is
free and open to all interested
couples and their children. Our
calendar also includes a
theater evening and Break-
the-Fast. The club is open for
all Jewish couples in the
Charlotte area to meet and
socialize with one another.
Dues are now pro-rated at $15
a couple. Presidents are Ken
and Marsha Stem, 563-2696.
