Page 11-THE NEWS-August, 1984 Thoughts From the Lubavitcher Rebbe The Month of Av By Rabbi Yossi Groner The ninth day of the month of Av, Ti’sha B’av, is the sad dest day of the year. On this day we come to the climax of our mourning of the destruc tion of both the first and se cond Holy Temples in Jerusalem. It comes after three weeks of mourning beginning with the 17th day of the month of Tammuz. We reflect on our present situation in exile and we express our yearn and desire to return to Israel and be united with all of Jewry. The 15th day of the month, which comes less than a week after Ti’sha B’av, is one of the happiest holidays on the Jewish csdendar. The Talmud teaches us that this day was reserved for match-making in Jerussdem. It was customary for Jewish girls to dress in white and make their way to the fields where they would form a circle and were greeted by young Jewish men. There was a lot of rejoicing and happiness. These two days express op posite feelings. First, we have intense mourning and sadness, we remember the destruction, the killing, the expulsion. Following this is a day of joy and happiness; one of the greatest holidays. Maimonides explains in his great work “Yad Hachazakeih”: The inner inten tion of a fast day is to reflect and return to G-d. When we return properly we cause the sadness to be transformed to a joyous day a ‘Yom Tov’. As with all fast days, so it is with Ti’sha B’av, that it will be changed to a holiday. Since Ti’sha B’av is the sad dest day of the year, one may despair when he reflects on the heirdship of the exile. Judaism says: “Don’t give up”. Not even one week goes by and we have the greatest Jewish holi day. On this day the Jews were forgiven. While they were wandering in the desert they died for forty years, and on this day the dying ended euid they were ready to enter the land of Israel. The 15th of Av is the full moon of this month; this is a sign of completion and wholeness. It is customary in Jewish communities through out the world to increase in the study of Torah beginning with the 15th of Av.
