Page 13-THE NEWS-September. 1984 Oil The Issues By Ira Gissen, Direetor, NC/VA Region ADL *One~Eyed Chinamen and Cross-Eyed Jews’ That was the unfortunate expression used by Dr. Henry H. Dodge, Chairman of the Chesterfield School Board Selection Commission. His awkward attempt to describe his objectivity struck a sour note. ADL wrote to him: “...After reading and reflect ing upon your reported com ments, I would speculate that it was your intent to show that you £ire a fair minded person whose decisions are free of religious and racial prejudice. Unfortunately your choice of words conveys to many people the opposite impression. “(Several people told us that they were incredulous that you would speak in such a fashion in the wake of the im broglio over the Superinten dent of schools ill-advised use of the term ‘genes’.) “As you know, in recent years government officials have become increasingly aware that the public wiU not abide offensive language. Former Vice President Spiro Agnew encountered this reac tion, as did former Secretary Butts and former Secretary Watts. “Needless to say, parents have particularly high expec tations regarding comments and conduct by public school officials. That is as it should be. Entrusted as they are with the development of our youth, it is not unreasonable to ex pect that public school of ficials will make a conscien tious effort to set the best possible example. Hence I am not surprised by the critical reaction to your statement. While your motives may have been the best, your choice of words was ill-advised and rather offensive. “In view of the unique im portance and responsibility of the position to which you have been reappointed, it would seem altogether appropriate for you to issue a statement making clear that your recent comments were an unfor tunate choice of words, but not an indication of prejudicial thinking or disciminatory predilictions in discharging the responsibilities of your office.” Remember This Alamo The Tony and Susan Alamo Christian Foundation is an evangelical cult responsibile for spreading virulent anti- Catholic propaganda across the nation. Richmond and Greensboro, as well as other cities in Virginia and North Carolina have been the recent targets of their bigotry. The Foundation is an Arkansas-based cult with vast holdings of property and businesses, there and in five other states — ranging from a cement plant to a grocery, its own printing presses, and a national and international net work of TV, radio and short wave radio programs. Alamo Foundation assets have been estimated ranging from $25 million to $60 million dollars. Since May of this year, the Alamo Foundation has distributed across the country leaflets titled “Tlie Pope’s Secrets” containing preposterous and obscene allegations. The Foundation claims that 5 million copies have been distributed and that 45 million to 50 million more are planned. Prior to the leaflets, unsign ed anti-Catholic posters — pasted to Catholic church walls and property, stores, utility poles and car wind shields — began to appear in February of this yeeu- — in many cities where the leaflets were later found. The posters, which claim the Vatican controls the U.S. media, have been attribued to the Alamo Foundation by the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. Alamo, himself, in a published inter view, endorsed the posters and said, “Maybe I am the author and maybe I’m not.” Alamo Foundation materi als have referred to the Vatican as “our enemy” and alleged that Catholics are not “true” Christians. Alamo has grievances against the Catholic church which he blamed in 1983 for the in vestigation which led to a federal court order that he pay minimum wages to the workers in the Foundation’s business enterprises. In early 1983, the Alamo Foundation placed long, remnbling: discourses by Tony Alamo as ads in several newspapers. Although Alamo denies being anti-Semitic, his tracts condemned “interna tional bankers,” a standard hate monger’s euphemism for Jews, and quoted a passage from “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” the notorious, anti-Semitic Czarist forgery. Tony Alamo, 49, and his wife, Susan, who died in 1982, gave up show business careers to found their Christian Foun dation in California in 1966. They preached the tenets of the “Jesus movement,” hand ing out Bibles from paper bags. As the movement grew, the Alamos moved their opera tions to Arkansas, Mrs. Alamo’s birthplace, in the mid-1970s. Now headquartered in Alma, where it operates 29 businesses and maintains housing for its youthful “con verts,” the Alamo Foundation has erected a multi-million dollar complex in Dyer, con taining offices, day-care facilities, dormitories, apart ments and single family residences for its members. In addition to holdings in Arkem- sas, the cult owns property in Arizona, Tennessee, Illinois, New York and Florida. The Alamo cult claims it operates “churches in Alma, in Saugus, CA, Brooklyn, NY, Chicago, IL, and Nashville, TN, and claims to have “mis sionaries” in Europe. Over the years the group printed £md distributed millions of Biblical tracts and other literature, at tacking targets ranging from the Internal Revenue Service to the Equal Rights Amendment. According to the IRS, the Alamo Foundation received some half million dollars in contributions in 1971 and was reported to have topped the million-dollar mark in con tributions several years later. The Alamo Foundation has been involved in leged actions brought by parents seeking to reclaim children who they said have been “brainwashed” and physically victimized by the cult. A woman who join^ the Alamo group in 1970 suid re mained with the group for a decade alleged that she was “brednwashed” through sleep deprivation, propaganda har- rangues, isolation from socie ty, forced labor and was told that her family was “satanic.” VAPARTMENre S723-lCEIIISEUTCmT ottuim nm CUHHI21212 UMM2 utility poles and car wind* mumwamm oiiiiTm MTi annul $2^7 ISVIMM ft SIMlf fllHriMI •* «if j;* **Dancitig The Stone*’ Proceeds from Hula Classes To Pay For Project Cornerstone This Fall the JCC again of fers classes taught by Anne Yudell, a member of the Charlotte Jewish community for 24 years.
