**pacesetters*’ Enjoy Dinner With Paul Cowan Need For Presidents’ Council Explored
Pearl Kier and Paul Cowan at
buffet table.
At a magnificent buffet din
ner, in the home of Sandra and
Leon Levine, Women’s Divi
sion Pacesetters and their
escorts joined author Paul
Cowan in exploring their
“Roots.” To a rapt audUence of
35, Mr. Cowan, author of “An
Orphan in History,” spoke of
his experiences in moving
from an assimilated Christian
Scientist family experience,
through anti-Semitic private
schooling and intermarriage,
to seeking and finding his
Jewish soul on the lower east
side of New York. He and his
wife Rachel, now a Jew-by-
Choice, work with interfaith
couples in the New York area.
The Pacesetters Division
was chaired by Pearl Kier and
Sandra Levine. Bobbi Bern
stein chaired this moving
event. Catering services for a
meal lauded for its presenta
tion, as well as its culinary suc
cess, were donated by Janet
Lefkowitz.
Those in attendance joined
the Cowans at a community
lecture at Temple Beth El,
cosponsored by B’nai B’rith
Lodge, the JCC and the
Federation.
On November 28, presidents
of the Jewish women’s organi
zations and key leaders from
the institutions met to explore
the need for a Presidents’*
Council. Areas of concern
ranged from colleague support
and clearing house functions
to a check for community-wide
response to such problems as
involving the unaffiliates,
responding to the closing of
USSR borders to Soviet Jew
ish emigration and planning
for Purim Balls, Chanukah
events, etc. Under considera
tion is the possibility of re
questing the institutions’
presidents to open their
meetings to the organizations’
presidents for community-
wide concerns and programs.
Also, discussed was the need
to include men’s organizations
in any clearing house activi
ties.
The possibilities for net
working were deemed exciting
and worth pursuing.
