JDC To Ethiopia
NEW YORK (JTA) - An
Alitalia plane flew from Ken
nedy International Airport
with seven tons of donated
new clothing and cloth at an
estimated value of $220,000
for distribution in Ethiopia. It
was donated to the American
Jewish Joint Distribution
Conmiittee.
The transportation was pro
vided gratis by Alitalia.
The JDC Ethiopian famine
relief has received more than
$300,000 in cash and pledges
to date, a third of which was
committed by the Central
British Fund - World Jewish
Relief in London, the JDC
said.
Israel Aid To Ethiopia
NEW YORK (JTA) - A
shipment of 4.5 tons of food
was flown from JFK Interna
tional Airport on El A1 planes
to Israel and from there will be
sent to Ethiopia.
The shipment, part of the
Israeli government’s assis
tance to famine stricken
Ethiopia, consists of dona
tions arranged by Israel’s Con
sul General in New York,
Naphtali La vie.
The commercial value of the
shipment is about $1.00,000. It
included over 100,000 portions
of protein-enriched concen
trated food and supplemental
vitamins. The food portions
are soya-based in order to
avoid known adverse affects
on famine victims.
The Ethiopian Ambassador
to the UN, Berhanu Dinka,
“gratefully acknowledged this
humanitarian gesture.”
Meanwhile, in Israel, the
Magen David Adom is under
taking a mass fund-raising
program to aid the victims of
fEmiine in Ethiopia. The cam
paign by Magen David Adom
is in addition to the official
Israeli government aid to the
Ethiopians.
Chicago Federation
Helps Ethiopians
CHICAGO (JTA) - The
Jewish Federation of Metro
politan Chicago made a
$25,000 contribution last week
to assist in the world-wide ef
forts to aid the victims of the
famine in Ethiopia.

Jews Ignored

N.Y. (JTA) — A Conservative
rabbi has asserted that he has
found many Jews “unsym
pathetic and unsupportive”
concerning the plight of poor
and homeless Jews, declaring
that the “rapidly growing
problem” of homelessnes has
emerged “as a major societal
trag^y.”
“There is a frightening
number of Jews all over
America and especially in New
York City who are poor and
homeless. Many of these
homeless suffer severe illness
and are in desperate need of
assistance.”
Rabbis* Fund Helps Feed
Hungry Non-Jews
PHILADELPHIA (JTA) -
Contributions by Philadelphia
rabbis are helping to feed
hungry residents of Phila
delphia through subsidization
of food distribution in the city.
The money comes from a
Rabbis’ Fund, administered
by the Board of Rabbis of
Greater Philadelphia, a
constituent of the Federation
of Jewish Agencies, according
to the Jewish Exponent.

Jewish Contributions There

the premise that ignorance
begets anti-Semitism, a bi
lingual pictorial history of
Jewish contributions to
Roman civilization from 161
BCE to the present, original
ly published in 1970, has been
reissued emd distributed to
every school library and public
library in the city of Rome, the
province and the surrounding
region.
The book, “Jewish Rome-
Roma Ebraica” by Henryk
Geller, was select^ by the
Rome Jewish conununity to
serve as an educationsd tool.
Its republication and distribu
tion has been subsidized by
the municipal, provincial and
regioned authorities in co
operation with the
community.

SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) -
Less than four days after its
dedication, San Francisco’s
monument to the Holocaust,
one of the few memorials to
the Holocaust on public pro
perty in the United States,
was desecrate.
The target of the vandals
was the 11 white plaster
bronze figures created by
sculptor George Segal, ten of
the representations prone and
one, a man, staring out of a
barbed-wire enclosure. Segal
titled the work, “The
Holocaust.”
The memorial is located in
Lincoln Park, overlooking San
Francisco Bay.
BUENOS AIRES (JTA) -
Newsstands and bookstores in
the central streets here con
tinue to be replete with anti-
Semitic literature — including
Nazi publications.
As an example, the latest
issue of the magazine, “Infor
mation on Masonry,” states
on its cover, “Zionism: Alfon-
sin its Servant,” and is sub
titled “Hitler was Right.”
Another of the anit-Semitic
publications, “Barbarie (Bar
barism) Aluarte Nacional”
(National Bulwark) which
defines itself as Peronist,
states that it expects “a true
national revolution” and
blames Jews for all evils.

BONN (JTA) - The Federal
Court in Karlsruhe, from
which there is no appeal, has
served notice on lower courts
throughout West Germany to
end the fairly common prac
tice of suspending prison
sentences imposed on neo-
Nazis. The court deplored pro
bation for neo-Nazis which can
be viewed by the public as un-
justified softness toward
rightwing extremism.
The anticipated long-term
effect is that courts in the
Federal Republic from now on
will avoid suspended
sentences.
Germany To Have New JCC
BONN (JTA) - The cor
nerstone of a 15 million Mark
new Jewish community center
was laid in Frankfurt last
week in the presence of local
civic and Jewish community
leaders. The city of Frankfurt
is providing 7.5 million Marks
towEird its construction.
The cornerstone of the
structure is inscribed with the
njmies of the 10,231 Frankfurt
Jews deported to Nazi death
camps and the more than
7,000 others who committed
suicide to avoid that fate.

TEL AVIV (JTA) - Doc
tors at Rothschild Hospital
implanted a pacemaker in a
new-born boy only minutes
after the infant was delivered
by Caesarian section with a
congenital heart defect. The
operation is believed to be
unique to medical practice.
Doctors said they hoped the
congenital defect, which oc-
curs once in every 27,000 live
births, would clear up within a
few months after which the
temporary pacemaker would
be removed.

publishd a sample newsletter
that contains no-cholesterol
recipes, articles on Jewish
holidays and vegetarianism,

truckloads of kosher cheese
totaling 150,000 pounds were
distributed recently to almost
30,000 needy Jewish families
throughout the metropolitan
area in the third such project
sponsored by the Metropoli

— Amoldo Niskier, a 48-year-
old teacher and journalist,
took his seat in the Brazilian
Academy of Letters, the first
Jew ever to achieve this
prestigious cultural position.

GENEVA (JTA) - Joseph
Amsalem, the newly-
appointed Ambassador of the
Central African Republic to
the United Nations here, is a
Jew who was bom in Fez,
Morocco. A resident of
Switzerland, he has been ac
tive in business in the Ivory
Coast and the Central African
Republic.
NEW YORK (JTA) - Per
haps the most unique ballot
cast in the U.S. presidential
election was by a Moscow
Jewish refusenik, Abe Stolar,
who was bom in Chicago. He
confirmed that he recorded his
vote at the American Em
bassy in the Russian capital in
a phone call with friends in
Detroit, according to the Stu
dent Struggle for Soviet
Jewry (SSS^). Stolar grew up
in Chicago and graduated high
school there. He was brought
to the USSR in 1931 by his
parents.
