From the Desk of Marty Schneer —JCC Executive Director Editorial Times To Remember — Never To Forget This month we will be observing three very impor tant events in our Jewish history. The first is the holi day of Passover, which begins on the evening of April 5, at which time at the first seder, families will read the Haggadah and retell the exodus from slavery. In homes in the United States, Israel and almost every country in the civilized world, we will recline and taste at least four full cups of wine as symbols that we are free people, masters of our fate. In Russia, there may be a few secret sederim, but they will not taste the wine of freedom or recline as free people. We will say special prayers for them. The second observance is that of the Holocaust. Yom HaShoa (Holocaust Remembrance Day) is April 18. Here in Charlotte, we will have services com memorating it on April 21. There will be a noontime service at Holocaust Square on Dilworth and Morehead Streets (across from Temple Israel) and a Service of Remembrance at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Church, 234 N. Sharon Amity Rd. The services are interdenominational and are being cosponsored by the Charlotte Jewish Federation and The Nation^ Conference of Christians and Jews. The keynote speaker at the evening service will be Susan Cemyak- Spatz. It is anticipated that at least 10 religious denomina tions will be represented, and it is hoped that as Jews, we msike every effort to attend. Six million of our Jews died during the Holocaust and five million others lost their lives during the horror of that decade. It is a time to remember, not to forget! April 26 marks Israel Independence Day, which will be celebrated in various ways by the temples and other institutions. May all of you have a very happy Pesach and may we all look forward to a better future, that of peace throughout the world. -GRADUATES* * * GRADUATES* * 'GRADUATES - In our June/July issue it has been our policy to list all high school and college graduates in our Jewish communi ty. This wiU include tennis courts, soc cer fields, the outdoor running track and the outdoor pools. The paving of the parking lot should be finished during the spring, providing the members with access to the recreational areas. Obviously, this tenta tive schedule depends to a great extent on favorable weather conditions as we look forward to a Spring '86 grand opening. After all the planning and countless meetings, it is hard to believe that we are so close to reaping some of the benefits. The Center plans to sponsor several membership events this spring and summer to celebrate the completion of our outdoor facilities. As you may be aware, our kick-off event for the entire Jewish community will be the “Imagination Tour” on April 14 (details on the front page). I am sure that those of you who attend the “Tour” share our tremen dous excitement and sense of accomplishment. In April, the ‘J’ will hold three other major events in cluding an Israel Indepen dence Day concert by the “Galgalim” (cosponsored by the B’nai B’rith Lodge and the Federation), the Youth Mac- cabiah Games and a special Charlotte Symphony concert- for ‘J’ members. We will also provide members an oppor- HAPPY PASSOVER Letters to the Editor Soldier Seeks Yiddish Cassettes The following letter was received by the Charlotte Yiddish Institute: I just read an item in the April 13,1984 issue of the For ward and am taking this op portunity of writing you in the hope that you can assist me. I also hope that this letter will reach you, in spite of the limited address. I am with the US Army and presently assigned in Ger many. Though I speak, read, write and understand Yiddish fluently, I find it impossible to obtain, see and enjoy Yiddish drama, comedy, etc. — in short, the spoken word. I have written a number of organiza tions, e.g. YIVO, JWB, etc., but to no avail. I am attemp ting to “borrow” any Yiddish performances: movies, TV shows, etc on VCR cassettes which I can possibly view for my own personal enjoyment. Is there any way that you can help? Of course, I am prepared to pay for the insured parcel post (US) shipment, both ways, and will return the cassettes in a minimal period of time. In event your institute does not have such cassettes available, do you think you can assist by advising the names and addresses of some organizations which may have them for loan? Needless to say, any assistance, information or con sideration you can provide to me in this matter will be p-atefully appreciated. Thank ing you in advance and looking forward to hearing from you in the very neai- future, I remain. Very hopefully yours, —David Feller Editors note: If you have information or resources for acquiring Yiddish VCR cassettes please advise David Pellen VSACAE/AEUP- C, Box 49, APO, N.Y. 09710. The management of the club has been very helpful in regard to both camp and swim team arrangements £md we are confident that you will be im pressed with their pool. The JCC Annual Meeting has been scheduled inunediate- ly following the “Imagination Tour” to encourage members to hear Center leaders ar ticulate their hopes and aspira tions for the coming year. We hope that the membership will take the opportunity to speak informally and exchange ideas with those elected to set policy for the JCC. The Boeird has planned everything, from our Phase-In Committees to the membership survey, to yield maximum input from the com munity. As a voluntary in stitution, the Jewish Com munity Center is proud of its democratic structure and traditions, and at the risk of sounding like a political ad, op portunities for participation in the decision making process are available if you £ire willing to give of your time. Many of you indicated in your survey responses that you would be willing to volunteer at the JCC and we will contact you re garding your preferences as new committees get started in the spring. Your power to have a significant impact in creases as we begin to define specific priorities for programs in the new building. We welcome your involvement at this crucial juncture. In an effort to clesu-ly define the role and function of JCC Board members and to en hance their skill in managing the decision making process, a Board training and orientation institute has been scheduled for Sunday, May 19. We an ticipate that this orientation session will provide the im petus for the Board to hold ongoing training sessions throughout the year and to help develop a sense of com mon purpose and mission among Board members. A representative from the Jewish Welfare Board (JWB), the national organization of JCCs, will help lead a variety of experimental exercises and ‘hands on’ workshops. One of our primary goals will be to develop a ‘shared vision’ of the Center that we can clearly define and measure as we move forward. It is my opinion that our goals can remain lof ty even as we seek to quantify our success. I look forward to working with the new Board to make our ‘vision’ for the future a reality.
