Page 5-THE NEWS June/July, 1985 New Academy Family Wins Israel Trip At “The Gala’’ By Martha Brenner The Hebrew Academy Gala, held on April 27 at historic Morrocroft, was a grand even ing of surprises and delights. The grandest surprise went to Beverly and Jim Seiferheld who won the drawing for a 10-day deluxe trip for two to Israel arranged by Mann Travels. The Seiferhelds, who will travel to Israel and Egypt in the fall, plan to take their daughter, Sarah, ein Academy second grader. “We want her to see the things she is learn ing about in the school,” says Beverly. Among the evening’s other surprises, Dr. Saul Brenner was honored for 14 years of outstanding service on the Academy’s Board of Direc tors. Peg^ Gartner, Acad emy president, presented a plaque to him. Saul served as cochairman of the education committee, 1st vice president, publicity chairman, and cochairmtm of two “Gala” fund raisers. “The Hebrew Academy pro vided an intellectually challenging education to my two sons zmd to the other children in Charlotte,” remarks Saul. “The school of fers a secular education as good as that of Charlotte Latin (where my sons also at tended school), yet fosters Jewish pride and knowledge. The school is clearly one of the major achievements of the Charlotte Jewish community.” Just short of 100 patron tickets were sold to the ‘Gala.’ Patrons mingled, danced and dined their way through the elegant rooms of Morrocroft, home of Charlene and Richard Muller. Richard also serves on the day school’s board. In the long dining room, a spectacul£ir bird of paradise floral arrangement reigned over the table as gala-goers sampled mock lobster salad, baked brie, raspberry mousse, chocolate crepes and other delights, all prepared by parents and friends of the school. The master of ceremonies for the evening was Dr. Stephen Fishman, whose col leagues in the UNCC’s Philosophy Department and other friends served as bartenders and waitresses. Once again Charlotte retailers and restauranteurs generous ly donated prizes for the draw ings. The following patrons won gift certificates; Mr. & Mrs. Solomon Baicovitz (Black Forest Book Store); Jerry Frucht (Haagen-Dazs); Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Hannes (Marriott Executive Center); Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Kier (Bakers’ Unlimited); Dr. Jay Kirsh (Riccio’s); Mr. & Mrs. Sam Kaplan (The Party Store); Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Levin (Stip- 0-Gram); Shelton Gorelick (Money Business); Mr. & Mrs. Arnie Pickholtz (Bennigan’s); Mr. & Mrs. Jeffrey Taylor (The Lamplighter); Simon Wojnowich (Phil’s Deli). Specid patrons at the Gala were Mr and Mrs. Robert Brodsky, who flew in from Connecticut. Sue was cochair- man of last year’s Gala.
