Newcomers Attend Shalom Y^all Evening By Helene Nathanson On April 30, Charlotte’s Jewish newcomers attended a Shalom Y’all gathering at the Armstrong House. Shalom Y’all, described as the “Jewish Welcome Wagon,” consists of a committee formed under the auspices of Women’s Division of Federation. Its main pur pose is to introduce recent Charlotteans to each other, as well as to the Jewish com munity and to provide a warm evening of information and conversation. The group was welcomed by Gail Bienstock, president of Women’s Division, Bobbi Bernstein discussed the func tions of Jewish Social Services. Marvin Bienstock spoke for a few minutes about the uni que qualities of Charlotte’s Jewish community. He observed that, “the group here tonight felt more accepted both within £md outside of the Jewish community than we had heard from previous groups. Apparently, our Outreach program is working.” Helene Nathanson, Diane Rosenberg and Jodi Cohen, members of the Shalom Y’all committee, were also introduced. The following Jewish newcomers were welcomed that evening; Howard Sherman, originally from New York, works as a computer programmer at UCB. Howard enjoys Charlotte’s Jewish Singles Group and has agreed to work with the Shalom Y’all comniit- tee in welcoming Jewish singles. Jackie Fishman, daughter of Dr. Susan Cerynak-Spatz, moved here six months ago from St. Louis. She teaches English at East Mecklenburg High School and has two young children. Lester Ravitz has been in Charlotte for one year, having moved from Long Island, N.Y. His wife, Susan, will be joining him here in June, upon the completion of her teaching commitment. Les is a bank consultant at Price, Waterhouse. He likes Charlotte very much. “I like the people, the pace, and the geography.” Frances Fischbein moved here 8 months ago from Winston-Salem, where she completed law school. She is a tax professional at Touche, Ross. Originally from Charleston, Frances looks for ward to becoming active in the Jewish Singles Group. Jane and Ed Abel moved here last winter from Maryland. Ed is a dentist and has relocated his practice. The Abels have two young daughters, Alissa and Naomi, who attend Temple Israel pre school. Sheryl and Jeff Gordon, originally from Minneapolis, moved to Charlotte in December. This was a job transfer for Jeff, who is Marketing Director of Pru Care.
