Ah — Lee —» Ya Israelis may soon have to start preparing for a large im migration of Chinese from Hong Kong. As we know, in 1997 Hong Kong will revert to the sovereignty of mainland China, prompting some entrepreneurs to look elsewhere. One enterprising Chinese family has edready made it in Israel. The Lee family is operating “Cantonese"-style Chinese restaurants in several towns. The restaurants are staffed completely by members of their own family: brothers, sisters, cousins, and in-laws. Over 50 Lees have already come to Israel to make their fortunes. If the trend continues, we could see people walking down Dizengoff munching egg roUs instead of felafel, and office workers sipping oolong tea rather than instant coffee. Or perhaps, fortune cookies printed in Hebrew. Federation Focuses On Local Needs For *86 (cont’d earmarked for local needs un til those needs have been met. In truth, I feel and expect that we will raise the new dollars we need and suspect we will exceed our goal.” The setting of that goal took place in August and continues this month under the direction of the Federation Allocations Committee, chaired by Don from p.l) Bernstein. The major local recipient institutions and organizations propose '86 budgets for review by the com mittee. Careful, mutually agreeable scrutiny leads to determining dollars needed from the '86 Campaign. Total ling all the budget requests plus the fixed dollar amount for UJA will determine the ’86 Campaign goal. New Fund Launched For Social Justice The Jewish Fund for Justice, a new Jewish founda tion concerned with issues of poverty and injustice in America, announced its first round of greuits — a symbolic thirteen in all. “In Jewish tradition, thir teen symbolizes coming of age,” explains Lois Roisman, the Fund’s new Executive Director. “These thirteen awards represent a new ex pression of Jewish philan thropy in the United States.” While Jews as individuals have gdways been generous where issues of social justice were concerned, there has never been a national Jewish grantmaking institution through which American Jews could respond to issues of poverty in America. With the advent of the Fund, there is now a Jewish partner to join the other denominations with financial support of efforts to combat poverty and the systemic disenfranchisement of low- income people in America. Si Kahn, Acting Board Chairman states, “The Jewish Fund for Justice offers American Jews a Jewish con text for expressing our tradi tional Jewish passion for social justice. We are proud to honor the memories of our im migrant parents and grand parents who believed in the American dresun. Through the Fund, we will work to make JOIN US FOR THE EVENING EXPERIENCE STARTING THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 5 WE’LL BE OPEN UNTIL 9 EVERY THURSDAY WITH EXCITING FASHION EVENTS, REFRESHMENTS, THE NEWEST THINGS TO WEAR AND THE PERSONAL SERVICE THAT MAKES SHOPPING A TREAT. SOUTHPARK THIS WEEK: PREVIEW OF FALL J o o Ln that dream available to all Americans by assisting the poor in their efforts to improve their lives.” Kahn is one of fif teen prominent Jews from all over the U.S. who form the Board of the Jewish Fund for Justice. Each of the thirteen grants supports efforts tow8u*d social change by forging an unusual partnership. A grant to the Navajo Nation helps bring Israeli agricultural experts to Navajo lands to teach drip ir rigation techniques. A specizd Tu B’shvat Fund within the Jewish Fund for Justice has been established to receive contributions toward further support of this project. Three other awards — one to the Los Angeles-based Southern California Interfaith Hunger Coalition, a second to the Philadelphia Jubilee Pro ject, and a third to the Chicago Jewish Council on Urban Af fairs — are challenge grants, to be matched by members of each local Jewish community. Women in the Work Force, a group endeavoring to im prove the working conditions of low-income women in High Point, NC, has received a $2,000 grant. Most of the other eight awards — bring a Jewish partner to existing funding efforts of other religious denominations.
