Education Event Planned With Queens College I-eadership Forum To Be Held
The Women’s Division of
the Charlotte Jewish Federa
tion, in conjunction with
Queens College, will present
its annual educational event
on October 23, at 7:30 p.m. on
the college campus. A panel
discussion of the controversial
topic, “The Media: Response
to Terrorism”, will be follow
ed by guest speaker, Daniel S.
Mariaschin. His topic will be
“Terrorism Against Jews:
What Is Our Response?”
The Education Committee,
cochaired by Jill Newman and
Lee Blumenthal, feels for
tunate to have obtained an ex
cellent panel of local, promi
nent and knowledgeable
citizens. The panelists will be
Rich Oppel, Editor of The
ICharlotte Observer; Bill
Walker, News Manager of
WSOC-TV; and Kathy Mer
ritt, News Director of WFAE,
[National Public Radio at
Daniel Mariaschin
UNCC. Moderator will be Dr.
Harry Chernotsky, Assistant
Professor of Political Science
at UNCC.
Mr. Mariaschin is Assistant
to the National Director of the
Anti-Defamation League of
B’nai B’rith and Director of
National Leadership for the
agency. An authority on the
politics of the Middle East, he
has written and lectured ex
tensively on that subject. He
has also worked as a radio
news reporter and announcer.
A summa cum laude grad
uate of the University of New
Hampshire and a member of
Phi Beta Kappa, he earned his
Masters Degree in contem
porary Jewish Studies at the
Philip W. Lown Center at
Brandeis University. He will
provide a unique perspective
to round out the evening as he
talks about terrorism as a
Jewish issue.

On Sunday, October 6,
Women’s Division will host
leadership women of the com
munity on a mini-mission to
Shalom Park. Foundation
President, Mark Bernstein,
will welcome the group; Foun
dation Building Chairman, Bill
Gorelick, will lead participants
on a tour of the new education
and recreation buildings.
Afterwards, the leaders will
address the issues important
in shaping Charlotte’s Jewish
future in the 1980s and ’90s.
A box brunch will be served.
Louise Bernstein and Carol
Waldman are coordinating the
event.
