Page 7-THE NEWS-October, 1985 The Joint Adult Institute Piece Together Your Jewishness — And Feel Good About It Last spring over 100 men and women took 18 classes in the two semesters of the first Joint Adult Institute (JAI). Some came because they were TOTAL BEGINNERS and their classes edlowed them to listen and ask whatever they wanted. Others came because they have a love of study of Judaism. Their classes offered advanced knowledge and ideas. Still others came to leam Jewish traditions, dance and music. They came, enjoyed, stayed and will register for this faU. Now it is your turn to become part of this suc cessful venture. RIGHT NOW! Below is a schedule of classes, location and fee. JAI is cosponsored by Temple Beth El, Temple Beth Shalom, Temple Israel, the Federation, Hebrew Academy and the JCC. All Classes at Temple Beth El 1st Hour: 7:45-8:45 PM October 10 - December 19 10 Consecutive Thursdays $15 Total Registration 2nd Hour. 9:00 -10:00 PM COURSE BASIC JUDAISM I (10 weeks) An introductory course in Jewish beliefs, sym bols, vocabulary and practices for people of all ages with limited or NO background. JEWISH FOLKWAYS AND FOLKLORE (7 weeks) An exploration and explanation of the day-to- day traditions, customs and superstitions which have shaped Jewish life in the home and in the community. CREATING A JEWISH HOME A primer on crafts, cooking, stories and customs anyone can use comfortably to add Jewish flavor to family life. ISRAELI DANCE (10 weeks) Learn the dances done at weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and social events. An hour of fun and great exercise. JEWISH MUSIC AND ART (7 weeks) Two weeks each of live and recorded Klezmer music, music of the Synagogue, and Yiddish Theater music. The last session will be an old fashioned sing-a-long. THE CYCLE OF JEWISH LIFE IN ACTION (7 weeks) A practical, why-we-do-what-we-do class on such topics as birth (circumcision, baby nam ing, “Pidyon Ha Ben”), conversion/adoption, Bar/Bat I^tzvah, sexuality, weddings, divorce and death (Chevra Kadisha, shivaymourning). JEWISH MYSTICISM & PHILOSOPHY MADE PRACTICAL (7 weeks) An in-depth study of Jewish philosophy bas ed on mystical concepts of the Torah. THE CYCLE OF THE JEWISH YEAR - GOING TO TEMPLE IN COMFORT (7 weeks) An orientation to the basic services for Shab- bat and all the other holidays including the meaning and purpose of the prayers. -SPECIAL EVENTS INSTRUCTOR Eleanor Weinglass Rabbi Marc Wilson Rabbi Yossef Groner Arthur Tirsun ON DECEMBER 5,12 & 19: The 10-week-classes will be held the 2nd hour. The fu-st hour will feature special study/lec tures by Rabbis Krantzler, Wilson and Groner. On 4 consecutive Tuesdays in October/November, Temple Israel will hold dinner seminars in ritual skills.
