On November 16-17,
representatives from North
Ceirolina lodges gathered in
Pinehurst, N.C. for a weekend
development seminar. Led by
Neil Rosen, Executive Direc
tor of District 5, the seminar
was an opportunity to learn
more about B’nai B’rith and
share problems and successes
with other lodges in the state.
Sessions were held on the
overall structure of the
organization, programming,
member acquisition eind reten
tion, and most importantly,
member involvement. Attend
ing from the Charlotte lodge
were; Frank Rosen, Sol Jaffa,
Alan Hirsch, Ken Stern,
David Fligel and Bob
Damsky.
All of us brought back new
ideas and enthusiasm; the
group developed a statewide
link that will enhance the
growth of B’nai B’rith in
North Carolina. They plan to
meet agedn to update progress
and to rekindle friendships.
Our thanks to Frank Rosen
and Alan Hirsch for organiz
ing this weekend.

baU game at the Charlotte

Christmas Substitution
Program
This year’s Christmas
Substitution Program was a
huge success. Almost 100 peo
ple each volunteered about 4
hours of their time so that
some of our non-Jewish
friends could spend the holi
day with family. The program,
organized this year by Lloyd
Scher, is very rewarding to aU.
Positions were filled at
Memorial, Mercy and Presby
terian Hospitals, and at the
county jail. Volunteers par
ticipated on both Christmas
Eve and Christmas Day.
Volunteers at the hospitsds
helped out in the emergency
room, x-ray, reception desk
and the nurses’ stations. At
the jail, we could be found in
the reception area, gate opera
tion and the booking room.
The program is a wonderful
way to extend our hand in
friendship during the
Christmas season. Lodges
across the state, including
Wilmington, Hickory and
Raleigh, participated in the
program this year. Thanks to
all of you who participated in
this very worthwhile program.

Children Adopt
Israeli Children
Students in the Joint
Religious School of Temples
Beth El and Beth Shalom,
have adopted a school for
disadvantaged children in
Israel. For Chanukah, they
sent stuffed animals to the
Ashalim Children’s Village.
Groups of three to four
students wrote brief notes to
their pen-pals, which were
enclosed with the animals.
They are eagerly awaiting
replies from Israel, so that
they can learn more about this
special school and their new
friends.
The Ashalim Children’s Vil
lage is a residential facility for
children with difficult family
situations. Many of the child
ren live at the school, receiving
their medical and other care
through the school. All of the
children eat their meals at the
school and spend most of the
day in class, studying or learn
ing such skills as sewing and
woodworking.
The Joint Religious School
plans to maintain an ongoing
relationship with the Ashalim
Children’s Village. They will
be writing to their pen-p£ds,
learning about Israel and help
ing the school to obtain some
of the equipment needed to
give these children a better
start in life.
