Charlotteans Attend UJA
Young Leadership Conference
By Adrien Chandler
They came from all over the
country. More than 3,000
young Jewish people gathered
in Washington, D.C. at the
Omni Shoreham Hotel, March
2-4, for the fifth bi-annual
United Jewish Appeal Young
Leadership Conference entitl
ed “Reaching the Dream.”
The numbers made it the
largest gathering of its kind
ever in American Jewish
history. Conferees spent three
days attending meetings,
listening to and questioning
the experts so they could be
better informed on the issues,
such as U.S.-Israeli foreign
policy, prospects for the peace
process £ind church-state rela
tions in America. Then, they
could use that new found
knowledge to better the situa-

The ’86 Campaign is still not
over. The workers are continu
ing to seek out those past
givers who have not had the
opportunity to pledge for this
year. In that semie vein, letters
have been sent to those with
out a giving history asking
them, both men and women, to
join in this monumental ac
complishment. The original
goal set for the ’86 Campaign
was $1,111,000. Katz, Zim-
mern and Hopkins feel that
this can be reached, and they
have pledged to do so.

Opening Sunday’s first full
session was Elie Wiesel, Chair
man of the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Council, professor,
author, and Nazi hunter, who
urged the crowd to remember
the past and work for the
future.
Delegates did take the time
to remember the present with
a rally that afternoon for
Soviet Jewry at LaFayette
Park across from the White
House. Singing songs and
waving giant posters of
refuseniks, about 400 people
cheered the release of dissi
dent Anatoly Shcharansky.
They also heard the call not to
forget other Soviet Jews who
are not free to celebrate their
culture and religion and to
urge more emigration to
Israel. The crowd heard from
the likes of Congressman Jack
Kemp (R-NY) who cochairs the
Congressional Coalition for
Soviet Jews and Morris
Abram of the National Civil
Rights Commission and Chair
of the National Conference on
Soviet Jewry. Then with
lighted Shabbat candles in
hand, the crowd filed past the
White House in silent protest.
The highlight of Monday’s
session and probably one of
the most important aspects of
the conference was a lobbying
trip to Capitol Hill. First, the
