Shalom Y’all Holds Wine and Cheese Party
By Jody Pinion
The Shalom Y’sdl committee
welcomed an interesting and
diverse group of newcomers at
a very enjoyable wine and
cheese party held on March 5.
After the pleasant informal
gathering, Sandra Weinstein
Shalom Y’all chair, welcomed
the group. Bobbi Bernstein,
President of the Women’s
Division of the Charlotte
Jewish Federation and spon
sor of the event, introduced
each of the organizational/in
stitutional representatives
who then welcomed the
newcomers and told about
themselves and their group.
The representatives present
were: Ethel Gordon, member
ship vice president, Temple
Beth El; Adrienne Rosenberg,
Director of Jewish Social Ser
vices; Rabbi Robert Seigel,
Temple Beth Shalom; Sally
Schrader, President of Temple
Beth El; Ruth Goldberg of the
Hebrew Academy; Maddie
Joffe, president of HaLailah
Chapter BBW; Jack Levinson,
president of Pizazz; Sue Ap-
plebaum of Temple Beth El
Sisterhood; Vicki Hopkins of
Charlotte Chapter BBW; Lois
Benjamin, president of Temple
Israel Sisterhood; Bill Ashen-
dorf, president of Temple
Israel.
Stan Swig, Interim Direc
tor of the JCC, and Marvin
Bienstock, Executive Director
of the Federation, spoke of our
magnificent new facilities.
Marvin emphasized that our
Jewish community is working
together toward this common
goal.
The newcomers then gave us
an interesting glimpse of their
diverse backgrounds.
Stu and Colleen Epstein have
been in Charlotte since
January 1. Stu is the new
athletic director at the JCC.
They have a 7-month-old son,
Billy.
Bob and Debbie Greenberg
are admittingly not new to
Charlotte. Bob has been here
5 years; newlyweds as of
November, they plan to be
come more involved with the
Jewish community. They were
also the main reason why
Mickey Greenberg came to
Charlotte from Atlanta one
year ago. She has been living
alone and missed the closeness
of family. She finds Charlotte
“hospitable and beautiful."
Michael and Simone Raus
have been in Charlotte only a
few months, Michael is from
Louisville Ky., Simone from
NY. Michael works for Gen
eral Shoelace and Simone is
with First Union.
Avri and Dvora Beeri moved
to Charlotte 6 months ago
from Jerusalem with dau
ghters Limor, 17 and Gali, 3
and son Yossi, 12. The move,
difficult as all of their family
remains in Israel, was
still a positive one for the
Beeris as they plan to make
Charlotte their home. Avri is
in textiles.

been in Charlotte for a year
and a half. Retired now, they
moved south from NY to be
closer to family. Claire feels it
is still too cold.
Jim and Elissa Meadow have
been here since January with
son Jeremy, 10 months. Jer
emy, in attendance, was par
ticularly fond of the crackers
we serve here in Charlotte. Jim
is a tax accountant with Price
Waterhouse; Elissa an RN at
Presbyterian Hospital. From
Los Angeles, they have found
Charlotte beautiful and lush —
even in winter.
Larry and Trish Fleishman
arrived from Fayetteville and
Chapel Hill 6 months ago.
They were looking for a larger
city and believe they have
found Charlotte to fit the bill.
Larry is a physiciem specializ
ing in internal medicine. Trish,
trained in medical technology,
has been occupied of late with
their 4-month-old son, Ben
jamin.
David and Irene Share have
been pleasantly surprised.
They moved here 5 months
ago from California and find
Charlotte a “unique and
remarkable integration of a
Jewish community.” David is
employed by Stork Graphics.
Irene, formerly in the jewelry
business, enjoys tennis.
Jay Tyroler, single, came to
Charlotte from Virginia 8
months ago to continue his
medical training as an intern
in internal medicine at
Charlotte Memorial Hospital.
He would prefer Charlotte to
be a little warmer as he likes
to run in the park.
Mark Wadler is newly engag
ed to Karen Orlin who remains
in Atlanta. He has been in
Charlotte 6 months as a
manufacturers representative
for Total Accessories. Al
though he travels frequently,
he hopes to become involved in
the Charlotte Jewish com
munity when he marries
Karen and she joins him here.
Allen Perlitz, here for one
year, is employed with Meck
lenburg Home Health as an oc
cupational therapist. He com
plimented the representatives
in attendance for the way they
keep new residents well in
formed concerning goings on
in Charlotte. His identical twin
remains in Charleston.
Gert and Joe Rosenberger
have been in Charlotte just 2
months. Originally from NY,
they also moved to Charlotte
to be closer to family. Joe
came out of retirement, with
Gert’s blessings. “I married
him for life but not for lunch.”
He now works for Kuppen-
heimer. Gert is looking for a
good mah-jongg game; Joe
prefers gin.
Dayle Kushner, a seasoned
Charlottean, plans to re
introduce herself to the
Charlotte community. She has
lived here 11 years and works
in Hotel and Video Com
munications. She is single. Her
roommate, Carol Hirsh, has
been in Charlotte since Oc
tober. Previously from Atlan
ta, Carol is an RN and works
in a weight loss clinic. She also
has family here and finds peo
ple very friendly. She is also
single.
Phil and Marcie Brier left the
party before this reporter had
a chance to tsdk with them.
Regretfully, I only know they
moved from NJ and Phil is “in
socks.”
Congratulations to the
Shalom Y’all committee
members for a very successful
evening: Maxine Hitt, Cassie
Bank, Sheryl Gordon, Diane
Rosenberg, Frances Fischbcin,
Jody Pinion, and chair, Sandra
Weinstein.
