Page 13-CJN SUPPLEMENT-May, 1986 Building Destroyed — JCC Activities Continue Like so many others I made several trips to the JCC site on Sharon-Amity Road to gaze upon the destruction and to try to make some sense out of the tragedy. One of the fire of ficials commented that he had never seen so many people deeply saddened by the loss of a building. I tried to explain that the Center was more than a building — it was a place where friends gathered, where our children grew up, where we learned together and played together. If nothing else, the loss of the building made clear how important the JCC has become to the Jewish com munity of Charlotte. The fire should energize our efforts in support of the Foundation’s project. We must do every thing possible to promote the construction of a new Center. As President I want to thank everyone for their generous offers of assistance. Both members and non members of the JCC have call ed to offer their time, money, and facilities. The Temples have opened wide their doors to us; Charlotte churches have offered everything from rooms for our classes and social func tions to bats and balls for the championship softball game; individuals have promised to help us find office furniture and trailers. It is gratifying to know that the Center has so many concerned and sym pathetic friends. The Executive Committee, which met the evening follow- news of tHe tra^c fire, made a commitment to do everything possible to con tinue business as usual. Despite the loss of the meiin building, the staff began at once to prepare for the open ing of the remaining facilities. It was agreed to open the pools for Labor Day weekend, to re-schedule the swim and tennis team banquet, to have the September 3 Luau as planned, and to find facilities for all scheduled Fall classes. The JCC will continue to serve the needs of the community Children salvaging: bricks from JCC Building for fund raiser for Foundation.
