Page 13-THE NEWS-August, 1986 Our Organizations Ha Lailah Chapter B*nai B^rith Women UNCC was very busy the last weekend of May with children from all over North Carolina participating in Special Olympics. Members of Ha Lailah Chapter of B’nai B’rith Women were there meeting the children and hav ing very special Safety Awareness classes. The children who came by were given pictures to color of telephones, houses, and a blank sheet on which to draw their families. The children were then asked if they knew their phone numbers, ad dresses, family members’ names, and whom to call if they need help. This informa tion was then put on the sheets that they had colored. The children also practiced dialing the operator and 911 in case of emergencies, talked about going in pairs, yelling “help”, and how the police help when you are in trouble. The parents and teachers who came by were greatly ap preciative of the information and the time that was given to the children. Some took the in formation back to their cities to fill out with children who were not there. The Ha Lailah members left feeling good about the time they had spent with these very special children. HIAS Seeks Former Immigrees In an effort to develop an ar chive of a most significant period in American Jewish history, HIAS — the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society — is looking for people who im migrated through Ellis Island. The 106-year-old agency is in terested in developing a collec tion of photographs and writ ten materials — letters, diaries, memoirs, general memorabilia — relating to the immigrant’s experience of his or her passage through Ellis Island. Documents and photo graphs will be used for HIAS publicity and exhibits, telling the story of Ellis Island in the words of those who were there. Material will also be shared with the news media for their possible use in connection with the scheduled reopening of the Great Hall on Ellis Island as a museum in 1988. The centen nial celebrations will take place in 1992. Information should be sent to: HIAS Public Relations Department, 200 Park Avenue South. New York, NY 10003. You are mar ried, raising your family, getting involved in various women’s groups. You are on a committee for this group and helping run a project for that group. Your days are filled. You are involved. Imagine this: You are a Jewish woman in your middle years. Your children are ready to go off on their own and you are deeply involved in many organizations. You are chairman of this committee and vice president of that group. Your days are filled. You are involved. Imagine this: You are a Jewish woman in your golden years. Your children and grandchildren call and visit and enjoy your wisdom. You are still involved in your organiza tions, giving the younger women the benefit of your ex perience. Your days are filled. You are involved. Imagine this: You are a Jewish woman whose health has failed. You need the care given in a nursing home. Your children and grandchildren must deal with their guilt, their fears. Though they call and visit, your days are empty. The community you worked for and with for so long has forgotten you. You are NOT involved. Charlotte B’nai B’rith Women, with the guidance of Adrienne Rosenberg of Jewish Social Services, has under taken a new project. We are planning to visit women, as well as men, living in local nursing homes to let them know they are not forgotten. We will bring our children, visit singly or in pairs. We will try to bring a little of our lives to these people: to let them know the community does care, to help fill their days, to keep them involved. We are involved.
