Page 15-THE NEWS-August, 1986 This That Hermann Kosak was recently elected President of the Charlotte Art League, an organization serving regional artists and the public by providing pro grams that encourage in terest in and knowledge of the Visual Arts. Flermann Kosak Teri Leibowitz of Leibowitz Marketing Research Association Inc. has been elected vice president/president-elect of the Charlotte chapter, American Marketing Association. • Architect Bob Gunn (Jenkins-Peer Architects) has won the top award in the design competition for North Carolina’s Vietnam Veterans Highway Memorial to be built near Lexington. His design was chosen over 130 others. • George Ackerman, member of the Timely Toastmasters of Fort Mill, S.C., won the club and district oratorical contest held in Rock Hill recently. His topic was “Do We Still Choose Liberty?” • Mrs. Klizabeth Small received the "Distinguished Human Ser vice Award” from the \.C. Association of Jewish Women and the State of N.C. • Michael (ireenspon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stan Greenspon, was recently named “Best Drummer” at the 1986 Battle of the Bands held at East Mecklenburg High School. Michael's band is “Dreamweaver.” • The following are some additional graduates who were not included in the June/July issue. Suzanne Koenigsberg, daughter of Helene Koenigsberg and Nat Koenigsberg, graduated from West Charlotte High and will be attending the University of S.C. Stacey Schefflin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marty Schef- flin. graduated from Lausanne Collegiate in Memphis, Tn. She will be attending the University of Georgia. Susan Edelman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irving Edelman, received an MBA from Babcock School of Management, Wake Forest Universi ty. Jonathan Levine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sol Levine, graduated from UNC Medical School. He will take his residency at Jeffer son Medical Hospital in Philadelphia. • Three wonderful happenings occurred this past spring in Jer- rie Schacher’s family. Her son, David Schacher, graduated from DeVry Institute in Atlanta with a B.S. in electronic engineer ing. After training in Ft. Lauderdale and Atlanta, he will be employed by Raycal-Milgo. Ritchie Schacher graduated from Olympic High School and will be attending CPCC. Larry Schacher has just received his third promotion from Harris- Teeter; he’s been working in their data processing and computer operations. The boys are the grandsons of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cohen. • More good news about our students! Jeffrey Shapiro, son of Marilyn Shapiro and Sol Shapiro, made the Chancellor’s List at UNCC for the spring semester with a grade point average of 4.0. Lisa Goidfarb, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Manny Goldfarb, was initiated into the Pi Alpha Alpha Honor Society with a 4.0 average. She is a graduate student at UNCC. Samuel Koenigsberg, son of Helene Koenigsberg and Nat Koenigsberg, has been inducted into UNCC’s Phi Kappa Phi, a national academic honorary society. Stacey Marshall, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Barry Marshall, was named ‘‘Youth of the Month” for July and Simon Kahn, son of Si Kahn and Elizabeth Minnich, was named “Youth of the Month” for August. They were 2 of 8 seniors given this honor (May through Aug.) and along with it $100 scholarships sponsored by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Involvement Council and McDonald’s restaurants. Dalya Massachi, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Massachi, is one of 28 high school students from Mecklenburg County who were invited to participate in Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics, a state-wide program of the UNC system. The program, held on five UNC campuses, is administered by the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics. Zach Coleman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Coleman, besides be ing a Presidential Scholar and National Merit winner, was on the two-person team from the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics in Durham that won the N.C. high school moot court competition recently. Daniel Brenner, son of Dr. and Mrs. Saul Brenner, won first place in the State Varsity debate tournament. Tali Gurion, son of Dr. and Mrs. Zev Gurion, won second place in the State Novice debate tournament. Both Daniel and T^ were on a two- person team and both attend Myers Park High School. Deborah MacEntee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn MacEntee, has been accepted at the North Carolina ^hool of Science and Mathematics as a rising junior. The Chinese super visor asked her Tel Aviv counterpart how to spell the name Israel. She wasn’t quite sure where it is located. • TEL AVIV (JTA) - Prof. Leo Sachs, professor of biology and head of the Department of Genetics at the Weizmann Institute of Science at Rehovot, has been awarded the 1986 Royal Society Welcome Foundation Prize, given by the London-based Royal Society e\ ery two years for original contributions to medical science. • NEW YORK (JTA) - A new record price for printed Hebraica waS set recently at Christie’s sale of 100 duplicate rare books from the library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. I bn Sahula’s Meshal ha-Kadmoni, an illustrated collection of fables and allegories printed in Brescia in 1491, sold for $176,000 — the highest price ever paid for a single printed Hebrew book. • According to figures provid ed by U.S. immigration authorities to a team of resear chers, in the past 20 years, 402 Israeli government officials were naturalized as U.S. citizens.
