(Frank Josephs) Intermarriage With The Arabs JERUSALEM - Gershom Schocken, editor of the New York Times of Israel, Ha'aretz, was quoted in £ui article in The Jerusalem Post by Yitzhak Korn as proposing intermar riage between Israelis and Arabs. Kom, who has held high positions in the Labor Zionist Movement, wrote that Mr. Schocken points out that “since in the 38 years of its ex istence the State of Israel has not succeeded in achieving understanding with the Arabs, we Israelis should break down the barriers bet ween our Jewish and Arab citizens and encourage inter marriage between them.” Korn quoted Schocken liberally in an article whose subject was the contention between the ultra-Orthodox and the secularists in Israel. “The response that inter marriage will bring about the destruction of the Jewish peo ple, both in Israel and in the diaspora, leads Schocken to argue that if we want to take our full place in Western socie ty, and especially in the United States, we should not object to intermarriage,” Kom added. “In his opinion, we would never have achieved key positions in American society were it not for mar riages between Jews and Gentiles." Kom then states that Rab bi Arthur Hertzberg disputes Schocken’s views. Kom considers Schocken’s proposal “dangerous.” Schocken spent a number of years in New York over 20 years ago launching the Schocken Publishing house. He returned to Israel where he rose to major in the Israel ar my, before joining in the fami- ly’s newspaper business, which he now heads. Federation Gift May Be Wise Tax Move For 1986 Congress is currently con sidering passage of the Tax Reform Act of 1986. A major consideration is the lowering of income tax brackets in future years. 1986 provides special oppor tunities for you to make a gift to the Federation and obtain an outstanding income tax deduction this year. Consider the following: • You can prepay your an nual campaign gift for one or more future years. You can deduct this prepayment at 1986 tax rates. • You can establish a Phil anthropic Fund at the Federa tion. This fund can be used in future years to satisfy your charitable needs and to meet your annual campaign obliga tions to the Federation. Your income tax deduction will be at this year’s rates. • Establish a charitable re mainder trust before the end •of this year. Use cash, securi ties or other assets to estab lish a trust, which will provide income to you/and your spouse for life. The income tax deduc tion is for part of the gift value based upon your age £ind the rate of trust income. If IRA or Keogh programs are restricted by the Tax Act, a charitable trust can supplement your re tirement program and provide a 1986 income tax deduction. • Establish a charitable lead trust prior to year-end which provides Federation with income for a period of years or your lifetime. At the end of the tmst, the assets are returned to you or to someone you designate. An income tax deduction is available at 1986 high brackets. Even if you pay taxes on future “phantom in come,” those taxes paid in the future will be based on the asset value on the date the trust was established. For details on these and other programs call Marvin Bienstock, Federation Exec utive Director, at 366-5007. A confidential briefing by Federation’s endowment/tax counsel will be scheduled for you at no obligation.
