Winter Shelter To Open For Homeless
There are women every day
who have no place to call
“home” and no place to sleep.
Many of these women also
have children. There are
shelters for these women, but
there are waiting lists to get in
to them.
Temple Israel is planning to
open a winter-night shelter for
homeless mothers and child
ren. It will be located on Lex
ington Avenue (right behind
the Temple). The house can ac
commodate ten people. The
women will be referred by
agencies and are basically
women who are able to become
self-sufficient and are trying to
make it.
In order for this project to
work, many people will have to
volunteer a little time and/or
money. The house will be staff
ed by volunteers: people to
stay overnight, to cook dinner,
to serve dinner, to clean, to
renovate, to solicit goods and
services, to raise funds, to
make phone calls and to train
volunteers. These homeless
mothers gmd children need
you!
Acts of loving kindness and
tzedakah are inherent to the
Jewish religion. What better
way to start the New Year
than to give a little of yourself
to help someone else. You
don’t need to be a member of
Temple Israel or even be
Jewish to help. You just need
to care.
