Everyone agreed that the Blumenthal Jewish Home is a model of what care for the elderly should be. Bobbi Bernstein, president of Women’s Division explain ed. “The Blumenthal Jewish Home is one of the major pro jects funded by the Charlotte Jewish Federation with an allocation of $51,500.” Mrs. Bernstein serves as the evaluator for the Home on the Allocations Committee. Another important compo nent of the Mini-Mission was developing an understanding of how our Federation dollars are helping to care for elderly Jews in Israel and throughout the world. Monies that go toward this care are sent through Federation’s $525,000 allocation to United Jewish Appeal. UJA distributes these funds through the Jewish Agency in Israel and the Joint Distribution Committee which serves distressed Jewish com munities worldwide and in Israel. Vicki Hopkins, Women’s Division Campaign Cochair, explained “Just as in the United States, Israel has an escalating elderly popula tion and is short thousands of beds for the critically ill. Kosher meals and warm clothing are reaching needy elderly Jews. The dignity of this population is being preserved because we are aware of the problems and because the ‘Joint’ oversees the service delivery. To further illustrate this issue the group viewed a UJA videotape “Ag ing — Israel’s New Challenge.” The return trip continued to be part of the educational ex perience with briefings on how our organizations are serving the elderly in Charlotte and throughout North Carolina. Esther Frank, treasurer of the N.C. Association of Jewish Women, explained the work of the organization in supporting the Home and Jewish educa tional projects in the state. Evelyn Berger told of the Jewish Community Center’s ongoing Chai-Lites group that meets once a week. She told of the JCC van which is available one day a week to take the elderly shopping and to doc tor’s appointments for a small fee. A new volunteer corps of mature, active adults is being formed to help out whenever needed. Tobey Silber, president of Charlotte Chapter BBW, reported that they are continu ing to coordinate the monthly Older Adult luncheons/dinners with the other women’s organizations and the JCC. BBW sponsors the Senior Women’s group which meets monthly for lunch and special projects. Chapter members are visiting Jewish residents in the non-Jewish nursing homes in town. Maddie Joffe, president of HaLailah BBW, told about the “Holiday” baskets that her group prepares for 27 Ms. White directing the tour. families in need. These baskets are made for Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah and Purim and are delivered by Jewish Social Services. Marcia Simon, president of Hadassah, which supports many projects in Israel, ex plained the work for the elder ly at Hadassah Medical Center. Much of that work is being done by the Department of Gerontology. Ruth Goldberg, vice president of the Hebrew Academy, shared photographs and anecdotes of the Academy’s new project of members of the JCC Chai- Lites participating in the Kab balah Shabbat program with the children every Friday at lunchtime.
