Details of the se cond donation will be publish ed in the January CJN as the presentation will be made dur ing Chanukah. Three pieces of art to be hung in the complex were received by the Visual Arts Committee. Two lithographs were donated by Mike and Sara Schreibman, “Path of Life” by Grayluck and “City in Yellow” by Arad. A third piece, a lithograph on extend ed loan, is from Peggy and Elliot Gartner. The artist credited to the work is Milsh- tein. We appreciate their thoughtfulness. The committee is constant ly looking for Jewish related art. Soon, we hope to bring to Charlotte a selection of art work that would be fitting for permanent display at our Center or for personal use. The works will be on view and available for purchase and/or donation. Funds also would be grate fully accepted to further our future projects. Currently our needs include specialized glass cases for Judaica and pedestals for sculpture. Until we m£ike these acquisitions, displays of these objects will be impossible. Consider commemorating an event or honoring a special person through a donation to the Visual Arts Committee of the Foundation. Contact Ethel Gordon at 366-0527 if you have any questions concerning donations or leave a message at the JCC office and a member of the committee will contact you. Art Show and Sale Continues at Shalom Park By Ethel Gordon Twenty-seven framed pieces of art are hanging in the East and West Galleries of the Blumenthal Education Building, Shalom Park, as part of a local art show and sale now going on through December 15. The purpose of the show is twofold; one, to acquaint the members and visitors of the Foundation Galleries with the work of local artists, and two, to raise funds for the Visual Arts Committee. The works are in a variety of media including watercolors, pastels, oils, acrylics and mix ed media. Subjects range from painted landscapes by Florence Jaffa, Josef Sklut and John Burtoff to mixed media abstracts by G.G. Kosch and Lina Levine. The ti tle “Kaleidoscope Memory” gives a hint of the content of one of G.G.’s pieces. A group of pieces combining calligraphy and watercolor washes by Laurie Graybeal are fresh and very profes sional. The work that states “A clean house is the sign of an empty mind” always brings smiles to the viewers. Other artists who submitted work to the show are Lorri Barman, Ethel Gordon, Renee Molko Gorelick, Joel Kweskin, Margie Rolnick, Carol Shafranek, Roberta Sosnik and Elkie Tulman. All artists showing their works are con tributors to the Foundation. A well attended opening reception was held Nov. 3. It was an event that fulfilled one of the art committee’s reasons for being, that of bringing peo ple together of similar in terests, people who may not have ordinarily met. Con viviality spread through the galleries and continued past the closing hour. Stop by and see the show. Highly visible signs are now located throughout the building to direct you to the galleries. While there be sure to look at the unframed art in a bin in the East Gallery. You may find something you would like to own or give as a gift. Proceeds go to the Visual Arts Committee of the Foundation to further their projects. Lina Levine chaired the show and reception with the help of Ethel Gordon. Lina’s tireless and creative efforts were seen in the publicity and the reception as well as the show as it currently hangs. Many thanks to all who participated. Special Programs Planned For Shalom Y*A11 Newcomers By Sandra Weinstein Shalom Y’All is intended to be a warm reception to our newcomers, introducing them to the Jewish community and the community at large. Can you imagine feeling all alone in a city of 360,000 population? Shsilom Y’All, sponsored by Women’s Division of Charlotte Jewish Federation, meets weekly on Tuesdays, 10 a.m.-12 noon at the “J”. There are also monthly meetings in the evening to accommodate working men and women, spouses, couples and all newcomers to Charlotte. The first evening meeting was held Nov. 4 and it was a huge success! Over 40 newcomers attended to enjoy meeting one another and to heeir Elciine Chemotsky, Jewish Family Services, speak on adjustments. Elaine had previously spoken to the daytime group and she was so appreciated for her warm delivery that it was most appropriate that she be the first evening speaker. This was an excellent beginning for a group that was most aware of their feelings of being new! For these newcomers kindness, warmth and consideration are a part of the reaching out process. Our community needs to make themselves even more aware that newcomers are very much in our midst and help them feel truly welcome and a part of our community.
