She herself is a newcomer having arrived in Charlotte just this past August. Before they had unpacked, Shirlee and W husband Jim had been to Shalom Park and made contact with the JCC and Federation. Just as rapid ly, they affiliated with a temple. Shirlee’s arrival coincided with the development of the Shalom Y’all Weekly Newcom ers Group, and she joined right in. When the group decided that something need ed to be done to gather the names of newcomers, Shirlee volunteered to chair that effort. In the months since she took on that responsibility she has discovered and uncovered al most 200 names. A person or family moving to Chsirlotte is a “discovery”. A person or family who has been here for a while but has just decided to get involved in the Jewish community is an “uncovery”. Shirlee Wadsworth Shirlee decided that collect ing the names wasn't enough. If the institutions and organi zations were to be helpful to newcomers they needed to know more about them. She has now put in place a conmiit- tee which calls newcomers to welcome them and which col lects demographic and interest data. All of which is or will be shared with the institutions and organizations. More than 65 such data gathering calls have been completed. As word of Shirlee’s work has gotten out, people are con stantly passing new names on to her. She is especially de lighted when the newcomer is still unpacking or, better yet, when they are still awaiting the arrival of the moving truck. ELECTROL YSIS BY LOIS Loit M.
