PURIM TREATS
The most characteristic item of cookery during Purim is
Hamantaschen, the three cornered pastries resembling
Haman’s hat and filled with poppy seeds, prunes, dates, nuts
or jams. Here are a variety of Hamantaschen recipes to make
for your family.
Regular Hamantaschen
I.
2 3 cup Crisco
2/3 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
Beat & mix well

Sift
2‘A cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
Add
^'4 cup orange juice
Combine all ingredients together and refrigerate in tin foil at
least one hour. Roll out dough on floured board and make circles
with a glass. Place filling of lekvar or apricot jam in center of
circle 2ind fold edges to form a triangle. Place on greased cookie
sheet. Bake 325 degrees for 15 minutes.
Oatmeal Hamantaschen
1 cup vegetable shortening (butter or margarine may be
substituted)
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2V2 cups sifted flour
^ tsp. baking soda
V2 tsp. salt
2V2 cups quick cooking oats
V2 cup water PLUS 2 tbsp.
Cream the shortening and sugar. Blend flour, baking soda and
salt with the oats. Mix the dry ingredients into the cream mix
ture alternately with water. Chill 30 minutes or longer and roll
out the dough thinly. Cut into 2 or 3-inch circles. Fill with
lekvar, apricot butter, etc. Shape into Hamantaschen and bake
at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
Lazy Day Hamantaschen
1 pkg. Duncan Hines Deluxe II Yellow Cake Mix
1 cup all'purpose flour
2 eggs
2 tbs. water
1 (12 oz.) jar prune, poppyseed filling or apricot preserves
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. With electric mixer, combine cake
mix, flour, eggs and water until well blended. On lightly floured
surface, roll Vi of the dough % inch thick. Cut into 2V2 to 3-inch
circles. In center of each circle, place 1 tsp. of filling. Bring edges
together to form a triangle, pinching the seams together from
top down to corner, leaving a small opening in center. Place on
cookie sheet that has been sprayed with non-stick spray. B^e
6 minutes or until lightly browned. Repeat with remaining
dough, working Va at a time. If necessary, lightly moisten edges
of dough with water to seal. Yield: 3 to 4 dozen.
