Page 10-THE NEWS-April, 1987 Chai-Lites Are Very Active The Chai-Lites were very in volved in a number of ac tivities inspite of some un favorable weather conditions in February. On Feb. 8, the HaLailah Chapter of BBW sponsored a Senior Adult Lun cheon for the Chai members. The monthly Senior Adult Ac tivity Day, sponsored by Charlotte BBW Chapter, was held at Randolph Park Apart ments on Feb. 10. A hot lunch was provided and persons who attended made hand puppets for the Howell Center. The monthly Sunday brunch was held on Feb. 15 and a feature film was shown on the VCR. Sue McFarland from Body Works has been leading the seniors in exercise class every week. The Chai-Lites also visited Discovery Place to view the exhibit: “India: A Festival of Science.” In March, a number of infor mative speakers from the Presbyterian Hospital Speak ers Bureau spoke on a variety of health related topics. On March 30 the first of a series. “Nutrition for Wellness.’’ began. Merle Gottheim, a registered nurse, will check blood pressure and pulse and will also be available to answer medical questions on the se cond and fourth Monday of each month. Records will be maintained on those par ticipating in the program. She has thirteen years of ex perience and presently is a nurse both at the Methodist Home and Wesley Nursing Home. Senior Health Clinic Offered Community Health Services held its first Senior Health Clinic at the JCC for persons over 55 in January. Blood pressure and pulse were checked and a urinalysis was given. The next clinic will be held on Wed., April 29 from 10 a.m. until noon. On this date, a glaucoma test will be ad ministered as well as a blood pressure and pulse check. In July, hemoglobin and blood sugar will be tested followed by flu vaccines in October. There is a $5 annual fee for the four clinics. Aqua*Fit Class Rescheduled Aqua-Fit, non-stressful water exercises specifically designed for Seniors, has been rescheduled for Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. There is no charge for this PIZAZZ Sun., Apr. 26 Sat., May 9 Sat., May 30 BRUNCH—12:30 p.m. at the “J” Volleyball at the “J”, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Dinner afterwards. Free Tax Assistance The A ARP is sponsoring a free tax counseling clinic at the “J” in the Chai lounge every Wednesday' from 2 to 7 p.m. through April 15. Volunteers trained by the IRS and A ARP will assist in dividuals of all ages in prepar ing their tax returns. There is no charge for this service. Call 366-5007 to make an appointment. By Phil Smith The Charlotte Jewish Com munity Center High School Basketball team traveled to Miami, FL on Feb. 27-Mar. 1 to participate in the 18th An nual Marvin Blumenthal Southeastern Tournament where they finished 4th out of a JCC field of 12 teams. On Friday morning, the Charlotte JCC defeated the defending champions of last year’s tournament, the Kan sas City JCC by a score of 51 to 45. The Charlotte team was led by senior forward Gerry Ceuvorst with 21 points. The team advanced to Round 2 to face the Savannah JCC. With a good all around team effort and performance by Gerry Ceuvorst’s 20 points, we defeated our opponents 51 to 36. On Saturday, the team faced a tournament favored for the Atlanta JCC. While both teams played hard, the lead exchanged hands several times. In the final minutes of the game the Atlanta JCC pulled off a close 4 point win, sending Charlotte to the final round against powerhouse Memphis JCC. At Sunday morning’s game against a big Memphis team, the Charlotte team hung close with a good all around team hustle and good inside play from Senior forwards Gerry Ceuvorst and A1 Mauceri. Andy Gainey (not p into the Championship game and the Charlotte team to a tournament surprise 4th place finish. The Charlotte JCC Senior forward Gerry Ceuvorst was picked for the All-Tournament 1st Team. Gerry led the tour nament in scoring with a 23.5 point average. Also playing well for the Charlotte team were Senior A1 Mauceri and Juniors David Rosen and David Asrael. In closer to home action, the Charlotte JCC High School team played in the CYO League Tournament March 4-8. After a win in the opening class. Come join Diane Burkhalter in the water.
