Soviet Jewry Rally On March 4, at Temple Beth El, Charlotte Chapter hosted its annual paid up membership luncheon. After a delicious potato and salad bar, 64 members witnessed the presentation of the 1985-86 Sidney G. Kusworm award by Peggy Gartner, Mid-Atlantic Regional Chair. This coveted award is given out nationally to one BBW chapter and one BB Lodge. In the past eleven years Charlotte Chapter has won this award four times. We then witnessed Susan Coen, membership vice presi dent, induct 34 new members into our Chapter and recog nized Betty Silver, Blanche Jaffa, Baila Pransky, Beth Linderman and Margie Lieb- stein as new Life Members. A $250 one time commitment to BBW entitles you to become a member for life. It is a con tribution of your commitment to the continuation of our organization. Our program featured Lindsey Ashcraft of “Double Take” showing us how simple scarves and other accessories make the fashion statement of the day. • Charlotte Chapter will once again join with many other volunteers in our community to help with Special Olympics and Children’s Miracle Net work Telethon. If you are in terested in participating in either of these worthwhile pro jects call Janine Rosner, 366-5631, for Special Olympics or Margie Liebstein, 541-1844, for the Telethon. Ha Lailaii Hunter House The annual baby shower was held at Hunter House on March 18. The five girls living there received gifts ranging from clothes, stuffed animals to a crib, which were ecstatically accepted. It was a wonderful evening made possi ble by the enormous generosi ty of HaLailah women. If you are interested in being part of this event in the future call Linda Spil, 541-0386. March Meeting Kathleen McClain, religious editor of The Charlotte Observer, spoke to our members at the home of Sue Brodsky. Ms. McClain gave us a unique insight to the plight of the Soviet Jew as seen from the non-Jewish prospective. Raffle The 9th Annual Member ship Raffle will be held on April 17. Photo/Roy Penny Cake W as Chocolate And Kosher WASHINGTON - Hidden among the findings of the Tower Commission report was new information on the cake that was taken as a gift to the Irsuiians by the American dele gation to Tehran last May. It was chocolate. And it was kosher. The delegation, accompany ing a planeload of weapons for Iran, bought the cake at a bakery in Tel Aviv before leav ing for the Iranian capital on May 25,1986, the report said. On the evening of Feb. 26, amidst the pouring rain, members of B’nai B’rith Women, B'nai B’rith Men, B’nai B’rith Youth and guests stood together on the steps of City Hall remembering our brother and sister Jews still living in Russia. Rael Gorelick, a member of Aberman/Barak AZA, welcomed everyone and introduced Al Rousso, Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem. Mr. Reserve Wed., April 29, to attend Hadassah’s first an nual “Myrtle Wreath Event” for Life Members. A lovely brunch will be served at 11 a.m. at the home of Sandra Levine, Life Membership chairwoman. Guest speaker will be Jaci Segaloff, a member of the Na tional Board of Hadassah and chairwoman of the newly created department “Career Women.” Rousso delivered a meaningful and beautiful speech to those assembled and then read a Proclamation from Mayor Harvey Gantt. As candles were lit, several people read the names of those who have been trying for years to leave Russia. Patricia Ades, a member of Chai-Chaverim BBG, closed the rally with a prayer for Soviet Jewry. —Wendy Rosen While honoring all of our life members, we will give special honors to those families who have several generations of Hadassah life members.
