Page 13 THE NEWS-May. 1987 Shalom Y* Party Great Time Had at Sing-A*Long Ne'wcomers Welcomed at Monthly Party By Jody Pinion A sing-a-long iiighlighted the March 11 Shalom Y’all Party for newcomers spon sored by the Women’s Divi sion of the Charlotte Jewish Federation. The evening began with “Jewish Geography”when posters were placed around the room depicting areas of the country and we were instructed to find our area of origin. I cheated and met the following newcomers: Sharon Schwartz has been in Charlotte since August from Queens, N.Y. She is single and works for Royal Insurance. She likes Charlotte “a lot so far”. She also enjoys swimm ing, playing tennis and the “nicer different lifestyle” she has found here. Thelma Wertzberger has worked for Royal Insurance for 29 years. Widowed, she decided to make the big move to Charlotte in September. Her two married children re main in South Orange, N.J. Although she loves Charlotte, she is understandably lonesome. Max and Judi Rosenberg moved to Charlotte from Manalapan, N.J. with their son Jason, 3‘/2-years-old. Max works for Dupont and is en joying the shorter commute to work. Judi was a nursery school teacher in N.J. They have been here since late February. Judi’s sister is Paula (Mrs. Richard A.) Klein. Alan and Vicki Goldstein have been in Charlotte since December from Los Angeles. Alan is a freelance photographer; Vicki is the coordinator of the Head In jury program at Charlotte Rehabilitation Hospital. They are enjoying the slower pace and friendliness they have found here and are looking for ward to becoming more a psirt of the community. Vicki is originally from Whiteville, N.C. Robin Leslie from Columbia, S.C. via Boston, has been in Charlotte since mid-February. She is single and £in executive secretary with Ivey’s advertis ing. Her interests include parapsychology, reading, mu sic and comedy. She also teaches psychic development. Olga Berczeller, also with Royed Insurance, has been here 11 months from Queens, N.Y. She enjoys music, tennis and going dancing. She is single and still adjusting to southern life. The following represen tatives were present and made themselves available for ques tions from the Newcomers: Jeff Turk, B’nai B’rith Lodge; Miriam Darholt and Rosaline Mann, Dorothy Guttman Chapter of Hadassah; Lois Benjamin, Rhoda Gleiberman, Judi Strause and Rabbi Marc Wilson, Temple Israel; Rabbi Robert Seigel, Temple Beth El V’Shalom; Marcia Simon, Hadassah; Peggy G2u*tner, Hebrew Academy. Following the getting-to- know-you session we sang-a- long with Marvin Bienstock and Andrew London on guitar and Kathy Schattner on guitar, flute and tambourine. Everyone joined in singing old favorites such as “This Lgmd is Your Land”, “If I had a Hammer” and “Hinay-ma-tov- u-ma-navim”. Thanks to the Shalom Y’all committee: Sandra Weinstein, Chair; Jody Pinion, Kim Schrader, Fran Rosenberg, Lorrie Colish, Doris Bernstein, Kassie Bank, Barbara Checkner, Michele Goodman, Eileen Shapiro and Renee Vitt for a very enjoyable evening. Elaine Chernotsky of Jewish Family Services spoke about “Holidays in Charlotte, Mak ing New Memories”. The even ing was most interesting, in formative and helpful. Elaine extended her warmth and car ing toward the newcomers, helping them to feel welcome in their new environment. There were 8 newcomers: Susan Freedman, a commer cial artist, moved from Winston-Sedem to Charlotte in January. Ivan Cooper has been in Charlotte one week. He will be joined by his family when school is out in Boulder, Col orado. He is the manager of Hazardous & Industrial Waste. His wife is a teacher and they have 3 children: Alana, age 12; Micha, age 9; and Shira, age 6. Charles and Nancy Curry ar rived in Charlotte April 1 from Buffalo, NY. Charles is general manager of ARATEXL/Servisco. Nancy is a registered nurse. They have 2 children: Kim, age 17 and Bryan, age 12. Incidental ly, Nancy is looking for a Mah Jongg group. Newcomers made welcome by Shalom Y’all committee Steve Garfinkel is an at torney with the law offices of Alan Gordon and is a member of the “J”. Steve is looking for a racquetball game. Stefani Penkney is project manager with Odell Associates. She’s meirried and has a cat. Stefani moved to Charlotte one month ago from Houston, Texas. Larry Schroeder moved from the Dallas/Fort Worth area several months ago and is a computer programmer. Jacob Frank moved to Charlotte from Myrtle Beach in January and is originally from Israel. He is self- employed in wholesale sales. Moshe Gottesman also mov ed here from Myrtle Beach in January and is originally from Israel.
