Page 14-THE NEWS-May, 1987 This ’n That Lenore Jones Deutsch Morris Speizman At its Sixteenth Biennial Convention in Jerusalem, Morris Speizman was elected Honorary President of the World Coun cil of Synagogues, international arm of the Conservative Move ment. Mr. Speizman is Honorary Life President of Temple Israel. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the United Synagogue of America. • Maurice Weinstein has been appointed by Governor Jim Mar tin to the Governor’s Task Force on Racial, Religious and Ethnic Violence and Intimidation. Mr. Weinstein is a practic ing attorney and has served on the Executive Board Of Interna tional B’nai B’rith. • The Charlotte City Council has appointed Arthur Perschetz to the newly created Citizens Oversight Committee for Cable Television. • Alan Kronovet son of Mr. and Mrs. David Kronovet, has been elected third vice president of the Mecklenburg County Young Democrats. • Marlene (Mrs. Leland) Fuerstman was chosen as the second place winner in The Charlotte Choral Society Vocal Periormance Award Scholarship. She will receive a $200 scholarship and is enrolled at Winthrop College and is a student of Jerry Helton, • Meg D. Goldstein has been selected for inclusion in the 1986 edition of “Outstanding Young Women of America”. Meg, who is mairried to Matthew Luftglass and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Goldstein, is a practicing attorney. • Lenore Jones Deutsch, M.C., a psychologist in private prac tice, has been elected president of Mecklenburg Psychological Association and has been appointed to the board of the Mecklenburg Mental Health Association. • Rabbi Robert Seigel has been elected vice president for con gregations of the newly formed Mecklenburg Ministries. The group grew out of a task force from the Charlotte Area Clergy Association and it will “implement programs that respond to human needs...raise issues of conscience and concern...(and) be an advocate for justice on behalf of the powerless in our community.” Spencer Friedlander son of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Friedlander, has been accepted to be part of the NC State Honors Band. • Winners in the local “Reflections” fine arts contest sponsored by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg PTA Council were recently an nounced. In the Visual Arts category, grades 7-9, Dennis Geronimus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Geronimus, was the first place winner. He is a student at McClintock Junior High. In the Photography division, K-3, Eric Seitlin placed fifth. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence Seitlin, and is a student at Beverly Woods Elementary. Winning first place in the Literature division, grades 10-12, was Daiya Massachi daughter of Rose Massachi and Ben Massachi. Daly a was also an area winner in the 1987 writing contest held in conjuction with the local observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, sponsored by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and the Community Relations Committee. She is a student at East Mecklenburg High School. • Sara Seiferheld daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Seiferheld, a 4th grader at the Hebrew Academy, was featured recently in The Charlotte Observer for her invention “the soap saver”. Vicki Hopkins’ remarks elicited applause as she first asked the Women’s Division workers to stand and then followed with an introduction of the Women’s Division Lion of Judah donors ($5000 and over). With a promise to announce the total at the end of the con cert, Ron Katz turned the evening over to Gemini. These twin brothers, sons of a Hungarian Ceintor, proceed ed to provide almost two hours of incredible instrumen tation and vocal interpreta tion. Their repertoire included familiar Israeli and Yiddish songs supplemented with vir tuoso performances of music from around the world. Their consumate musicianship was evident in their mastery of in struments as varied as violir^ mandolin, guitar, bowed psalter, penny whistle, “bones”, percussion and “limber jack”. The latter being a native American folk form using a dancing wooden figure. Intermission was enhanced by a sumptuous dessert table consisting of cake, Dove Bars, fruit, cheeses and coffee. Those responsible for the dessert, Ruth Goldberg, Mike Simon, Vicki Hopkins and Bobbi Bernstein, were thank ed from the stage by Ron Katz. As the second half of the program drew to a close, the enthusiastic response of the audience produced two encores. Then, with thanks and with pride, Ron Katz ended the festivities with the announce ment of the Campaign total: a spectacular $1,225,000!
