He will be doing his in ternship in internal medicine and pediatrics at the U. of Indiana in Indianapolis. David Malin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerald Malin, graduated from UNC-CH with a BS in Chem istry. He will be attending UNC School of Dentistry. Mar ti (Mrs. Cary) Nordin graduated from UNCC with a Masters Degree in Education. Brian Nydish, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Nydish, has received a BA in Business from UNCC. Susan A. Cohen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irving M. Cohen of Hickory, received a BA in Economics and Political Science from Emory U. Cindy Rosenberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Rosenberg, received a Masters degree in Economics from Stanford U. and will be attending the Wharton School of Business for an MBA in the fall. This summer she is working in Bogota, Colombia on a grant from the coffee industry. Susanne Bograd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bograd, graduated from East Mecklen burg High, will attend Florida State U. Andrew Bernstein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Bern stein, received a BA in Politi cal Science from Furman U. Mr. and Mrs. Julius Cohen of Norwood, NC can be mighty proud of their family: Daughter Kathy Cohen re ceived her MA from the School of Architecture, U. of Virginia; daughter Ruth! Cohen, received her MPH in Nutrition from UNC-CH; son Robbie Cohen graduated from South Stanly High School and will attend UNCC. Art Weinstein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Weinstein, has been elected editor of The Forty-Niner Times student newspaper at UNCC for the 1987-88 academic year. • Brian Schneiderman, a stu dent at West Charlotte High School, and son of Alexis Stein and Michael Schneiderman, has racked up several honors recently: he placed fourth on the novice debate team at the State Championship Debate- Speech Tournament; placed first as novice debate speaker (the school won first place overall). He also participated in the state History Day com petition and his team won second place on the state level. They previously won first place in the district competi tion. • The West Charlotte High School’s debate team was a big winner at the Myers Park High School’s recent tourna ment. Matt Pera, son of Judy Pera and Albert Pera, came in first on the novice debate team; Michael Sadoff, son of Dr. and Mrs. Harvey Sadoff, came in fifth in oratory.. • Mitch Rolnick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Iven Rolnick, re ceived the sixth grade Award of Excellence in Mathematics at Charlotte Country Day School. Mat thew Scharf, son of Charlene Scharf and Michael Scharf, won first place in the N.C. In dependent Schools Track Meet in Asheville, NC for pole vaulting, recording a vault of 12 feet, 6 inches. Anthony Levine, son of Fairlyn Montella and Phil Levine, finished first in pole vault in the Conference Track Meet at Independence High School in May. Brian Bernhardt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bernhardt, was selected for the Jr. High School All Conference Soccer Team. He received the Charlotte Mecklenburg Junior High Coaches Association All League Award for outstand ing performance in Soccer. (Olympic High) ROTC Scholarship and Presidential Scholar — Michael Schwartz; (East Mecklenburg) — Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Award — Dalya Massachi (she was also a member of the school’s team in the World Finals of the Odyssey of the Mind competi tion); Presidential Scholar — Ron Malin, Alison Tepper, Jaime Warshawsky, John Sadoff; NC Scholars — Joseph Labovitz; CMS Scholsir — Ron Malin. • Debra Daumit, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Daumit, a rising senior at East Mecklen burg High School, won the Yale Book Award. • Caryn Kaplan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Kaplan, who graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1986 and went off to study at Manhattan School of Music, has appeared in the chorus of “The King and I” at Can- dlewood Playhouse in New Fairfield, Conn. The part en couraged her to try out for a national tour of “West Side Story” headlined by Jack Wagner, better known as Frisco in “General Hospital.” She got a part as one of the Sharks’ girls and will under study Maria, the femsJe lead, on the two-month national tour that began in mid-July. • New promotions: Dave Sachs to corporate accountant at W.R. Bonsai Co; Neal Nodvin to vice president. First Union National Bank of N.C., Charlotte. • Judy (Mrs. Henry) Goldman won third place in the poetry contest sponsored by the Writer’s Retreat at Francis Marion College. For more about Judy and her new book of poetry, see page 9. • Rabbi Robert Seigel and fellow members of the YEDIDIM were recently honored by Dr. Alfred Gott- schalk.
