Page 3-THE NEWS August, 1987 Anti-Israel Propaganda we Are CrateSui By Ira Gissen NC/VA ADL Director The National Broadcasting Company’s hour-long televi sion program on the 20th an niversary of the Six-Day War presented a one-sided, anti- Israel report that distorted reality. It was one of several reports in the media that presented a totally negative impression of Israel. There were several features that these biased reports had in common. They failed to tell what things were like prior to the Six-Day War. At that time, the Arab states were talking about victory over Israel and throwing the Israeli population into the sea. They failed to tell how times have changed in twenty years. Egypt, the largest Arab state, is at peace with Israel. King Hussein of Jordan is looking for a way to make peace. King Hassan of Morocco has wel comed Shimon Peres to Rabat. Others acknowledge that Israel is here to stay. It is on ly the most radical, anti- American and terroristic leaders who continue to talk of Letters to the Editor God Listens Mr. J.C. Allen, Chairman of the Deacons at St. John’s Bap tist Church, came to the office of Temple Beth El V’Shalom to personally deliver the following statement adopted by the deacons on June 29, 1987, and proposed to their congregation for its considera tion on Sunday, July 5, 1987. “We, the members of St. John’s Baptist Church, have heard with dismay the report of remarks made by B^ey Smith, a Southern Baptist evangelist, that ‘God does not hear the prayer of a Jew.’ We totally reject his statement. “We affirm our unity with all believers in one God and acknowledge our debt to the Jewish people for our long common heritage as we have traveled the pilgrim way. “We promise to pray for you and ask your prayers tor us. We affirm Rabbi Marc Wil son’s assertion that he will continue to believe that a lov ing, benevolent God listens to any prayer uttered with sincerity.” Rabbi Robert A. Progress toward peace has been made as a consequence of Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War. Israel’s strength was demonstrated again, in 1973, when Sadat and Assad tried to turn the strategic position back to the days before the Six-Day War. They failed. In addition, the relationship between Israel and the United States has changed. In the aftermath of the ’67 War, Israel has become an increas ingly important, pro-American strategic factor. As a result, ties between the two nations have been bolstered to the benefit of both. The peace pro cess has been encouraged fur ther because Arab states are realizing that the relationship between the U.S. and Israel as indissoluble; therefore, it is il lusory to fantasize that the future will bring a weaker Israel, one that once again will be vulnerable to attack. Further, the city of Jerusalem is once again unified, the Jewish quarter is restored and access to the Western Wall has been re gained. Christian and Moslem holy places enjoy complete protection. The movement toward peace in the Middle East would not have been possible without Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War. That war result ed in defeat for those who would have liked interminable war with the ultimate destruc tion of Israel. It is ironic that were it not for the open, democratic socie ty that exists in Israel, NBC could not have concocted this program. By Charlene Muller Editor’s note: This was written for Shulamit Muller’s Bat Mitz- vah at Temple Israel by her mother. Together, Shulamit and I have traveled the world seek ing and finding proof that Judaism is alive and has sur vived through the centuries and is the hope for us all. We saw it in the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdcmi, the year we spent Chanukah there and lit our menorah proudly in our window so the people wsdking along the canals could see it. We are grateful to have stood by the grave of Menassah ben Israel, our great ancestor and friend of Rembrandt, who saved many Jews. We felt it in Ann Frank’s house, where she preserved for the world, a diary, an account of her years in hiding. We are grateful to have wandered through the Ghetto in Venice and the old Jewish Quarter in Seville, stood by the synagogue in Vienna, with gu£irds posted to protect it and saw the shul in Brussels, riddled with buUet holes of a past attack. We are grateful that we were there in Kenya and in Athens and saw their small communities still flourishing. We were welcomed in the tem ple in Copenhagen and saw the newly erected one in Luxem bourg. We are grateful to have walked through Auschwitz in the footsteps of our cherished fellow Jews and felt their agony as if it was our own. We also saw the plaque that now marks the Warsaw Ghetto. We saw the last of the Jewish community in Cracow and how these few hundred are still keeping Judaism alive today. We are grateful to have been in Russia, the land where Shulamit’s twin for today, Irina, still lives and has hope some day to be able to see all the places in the world that are free. V/e are grateful to have traveled often to our wonder ful land of Israel and walked on its sacred earth and have seen our proud Jewish heritage preserved. We saw the Ethiopian J ews roaming healthy and happy in the streets of their new found land. Soon, our daughter, Shulamit, will stand on Masada, as the many brave Jews that have corne before her, and will nnake her Bat Mitzvah there aJso. We are so grateful that, with God’s blessings, together we could be a pgtft of and czu-ry on £dl the beautiful Jewish tradi tions, so richly preserved in our hearts arid still alive throughout the world. We are grateful!
